1. AA-002-078 Removal of Senate Mandated Assessment for 5-Week Classes

2. Background On two previous occasions the Academic Senate has requested information showing the academic effectiveness of 5 week courses. None has been presented.

3. Background "This is an imposition on departments and there is a low level of compliance. Some of the reasons for this are: Ten-week courses do not have this requirement. Five-week courses have the same number of contact hours and course content as ten-week courses. Many five-week courses have already submitted such assessment and have demonstrated effectiveness in the past, additional data is not needed. This requirement does not support the offering of five- week course modules in the summer to better meet student needs and FTE targets."

4. Discussion It is alleged that the data is in Undergraduate Studies, it just has not been shown to the Senate. IRAP could pull a quick set of data to show how well these students do in further studies. The point is not to punish the Summer program, but if these courses are particularly effective, why offer them only in the summer?

5. Recommendation The Office of Undergraduate Studies submits a single report on the relative academic effectiveness of at least a cross-section of five- week courses to the Academic Senate.
