Contemporary Art Creative expression in visual art currently being produced by artists who work in a modernist and postmodernist idiom in London today. It includes various kinds of visual representations, such as paintings, sculpture, photography, video, film, electronic media, Montages and installations etc (Third Text).

Representation of Identity It is the process by which members of a culture use language broadly defined as any system which deploys signs, any signifying system} to produce meaning (Hall, 1997, p.61). The process of representation: the manner in which meaning is constructed and conveyed through language and objects (Hall, 1997, p.153).

Informal Art Education teaching by artists and/or arts organisations in informal education settings, such as museums, galleries, community centres, youth centres. Some of the artists ’ projects in this research also took place in formal settings i.e. schools

Plan of Action To present some research data about 3 women artists To explore ways in which ethnicity and gender shape their identities and art practices To engage in discussion with the audience about what contemporary art can tell us about British cultural identity
