CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Office of Research Purpose of the Collection A Government requirement (HERDC) that is used in the calculation of block grant funding to higher education institutions in Australia As a database of research publications for individual academics and QUT as a whole Data for our ERA submission
5
CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Office of Research Academic Promotion (AKA why we enter ALL publications not just HERDC) The Office of Research produces a Research Profile for each applicant detailing Grant activity HDR Completions Publications (HERDC and Scholarly )
6
CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Office of Research HERDC Research Publications A1 – Book - 5 HERDC points B – Book Chapter - 1 HERDC point for first chapter, less for subsequent chapters C1 – Journal - 1 HERDC point E1 – Conference Paper - 1 HERDC point QUT Scholarly Publications Everything else (eg. Non-refereed journals and conferences, reference books, reports, etc) - 0 HERDC points
7
CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Office of Research How does the HERDC weighting work? A book with one QUT author? 5 for QUT and the author A book with one QUT author and one external author? 2.5 for QUT and for each author A journal with 2 external authors and 2 QUT authors? 0.5 for QUT and 0.25 for each author
8
CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Office of Research HERDC weighting for Book Chapters? One QUT author writes 7 chapters of a 15 chapter book 1 for first chapter and (6*4)/(15-1)= 1.71 for the remaining chapters – total 2.71 Cannot be more than 5, otherwise weighting would be greater than that of the whole book! RM calculates book chapters and all other HERDC weightings of publications for you
9
CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Office of Research What is a research publication? Meets the HERDC Definition of ResearchDefinition of Research This will be checked by the Faculty/Institute Meets the general requirement of a scholarly paper
10
CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Office of Research What is a research publication? 1.3.9. Research For the purposes of these specifications, research comprises: creative work undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of man, culture and society, and the use of this stock of knowledge to devise new applications [OEDC (2002), Frascati Manual: Proposed Standard Practice for Surveys on Research and Experimental Development, OEDC: Paris]. any activity classified as research which is characterised by originality; it should have investigation as a primary objective and should have the potential to produce results that are sufficiently general for humanity's stock of knowledge (theoretical and/or practical) to be recognisably increased. Most higher education research work would qualify as research. pure basic research, strategic basic research, applied research and experimental development.
11
CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Office of Research What is not research? Preparation for teaching Scientific and technical information services General purpose or routine data collection Reports
12
CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Office of Research For the collection of 2008 Publications Was it published in 2008? The year of print or copyright Is this the first time the research has been published? A conference paper then published in a journal can only be counted once Is a QUT staff member, student or adjunct professor listed as an author in the publication? Identified in the by-line or author listing of the publication
13
CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Office of Research QUT Affiliation If the author is not acknowledged in the publication as being from QUT then attach the Statement of QUT Affiliation form Statement of QUT Affiliation Student or Staff Code - Status of author at time of publication or their full time role
14
CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Office of Research Author AOU Historical Remember that the AOU used must represent the area the author was working in at the time of the publications not their current AOU. Eg. Science and Technology AOUs (1191XXX) have only commenced this year so primary AOU for the publication and author AOU should reflect their old 119 or 116 AOUs. The RDP team are happy to help fix up publication AOUs so faculty/institutes need not worry to much about the exact AOU of the author – just need to remember to indicate on the coversheet if the publication should be listed as faculty or institute and remember to add linked AOUs for collaborations and institute publications
15
CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Office of Research Author AOU – AOU Codes Example 116nnnn - Faculty only 12516nn - Institute, with embedded Faculty code 12500nn - Institute only Institute AOU codes allow us to "count" the research by both Faculty and Institute An author who is a member of one or more Institutes and belongs to a Faculty should choose the AOU code that best fits the research publication. 23
CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Office of Research Digital Object Identifier (DOI) cont’d This link inserted into Documents in RM RDP do not require a copy of the article if DOI available Bibliographic details still need to be entered in RM, eg volume, issue, page numbers etc If DOI unavailable, copy of article and full verification material are required as per previous years
24
CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Office of Research Things to remember about journal articles Author affiliation stated in the publication Must be peer-reviewed Must have the referee jersey in Ulrich’s! All journals in Thomson ISI are refereedThomson ISI Not everything in a refereed journal will meet the definition of research eg book reviews, very short articles
25

CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Office of Research Dollar “Worth” What a research driver is “worth” is very dependent on the Government RBGF pot, performance of each individual HEP and their share of this pot, and other tax implications on HEPs. VERY ROUGHLY… A whole book (A1) might be considered worth around $7500-$8000 All other whole contributions (ie 1 HERDC point) might be considered worth around $1500-$1600
