2 Election of 1876 The Election of 1876 involved Rutherford B. Hayes, the Republican Governor of Ohio and Samuel J. Tilden, the Democratic Governor of New York.

4 Samuel J. Tilden Governor of New York Bourbon Democrat Chairman of the Democratic State Committee He was a corruption fighter. Success as governor earned him the Presidential Nomination

8  Tilden won the popular vote.  Tilden won the electoral vote with 184 votes and Hayes with 165.  20 votes were un-counted.

9 Controversy Each candidate claimed that they won Florida, Louisiana, and South Carolina. The Republican voters of these three states were subject to racial threats. Electoral Commission put in place. Hayes elected through the Compromise of 1877.

11 The Election of 1936 The Election of 1936 involved incumbent Democratic President, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Republican Governor of Kansas, Alfred Landon.

ROOSEVELT ALFRED LANDON  Government Economic Intervention  For Pension Funds  Wants the U.S. To hold a strong role in the world.  Wants to continue previous government activities.  Thinks the market should control the Economy, not the Government  Against Pension Funds and the “New Deal”  Believes strongly in Isolationism  Wants to stop previous government activates such as the “New Deal”
