H. Leeb, TU WienRECFA-Meeting, Innsbruck, 26.3.2004 The Project n_TOF-ND-ADS Objective: Measurement of neutron induced reaction cross sections relevant for nuclear astrophysics, transmutation of radioactive waste and the Thorium-Uranium cycle. Measurements at the nTOF Facility at CERN: (n, ) in the energy interval 1eV to 1 MeV (n,f) in the energy interval 1eV to 250 MeV (n,xn) in the energy range 5 MeV to 60 MeV (use of the neutron sources at Democritos, Geel, Louvain-la-Neuve) Consortium: About 130 scientists from 40 institutions from Europe and US Project supported by EC, national funding agencies and CERN Austrian Participation (7 scientists, about 8% contribution) - TU Wien, Atominstitut of Austrian Universities - Univ. Wien, Institut für Isotopenforschung und Kernphysik - Fachhochschule Wiener Neustadt

H. Leeb, TU WienRECFA-Meeting, Innsbruck, 26.3.2004 Main Achievements The nTOF Facility at CERN offers a unique possibility to perform precise measurements on highly radioactive samples. Design performance of the experiments could be reached. Measurement campaigns in 2002, 2003 very successful (n, ) 151 Sm, Pb-isotopes, 209 Bi, 232 Th, 24-26 Mg,Zr-isotopes, 139 La (n,f) 232 Th,U-isotopes, 237 Np, 241,243 Am Measurement campaign 2004: (n, ) measurements with 4 calorimeter on the radioactive samples U-isotopes, 237 Np,Pu-isotopes 241,243 Am Characteristics: High instantaneous flux, low frequency, High energy resolution at low energies

H. Leeb, TU WienRECFA-Meeting, Innsbruck, 26.3.2004 Austrian Activities Electronics: Development of fast electronic modules for FADC by Fachhoch- schule Wr. Neustadt Experiments: Measurement of (n,xn) cross sections via detection of prompt . Theory: Responsible for the transfer of the data to the nuclear data centers (NEA/OECD and IAEA) and the construction of evaluated nuclear data files including the data taken by the nTOF-project Austrian scientists have taken part in all activities foreseen in the n_TOF-ND-ADS project. In particular they have actively contributed to all measurements performed at CERN. In addition, part of the Austrian activities related to the n_TOF project have been performed at other neutron sources, i.e. Geel and Louvain-la-Neuve. Particular responsibilities taken by Austrian scientiests are:
