Inorganic Compounds (contain no carbon) Nonliving substances essential to organisms. –Minerals:in the form of solids or ions- Ca 2+, Mg 2+, Fe, P, Cl - –Water- polar solvent, dissolves ions, vitamins; makes up 50-90% of an organism’s weight.
3
Organic Compounds (contain carbon) Responsible for the living properties of a cell Carbon is the central element Forms 4 covalent bonds C bonds to with C’s form rings and chains
4
Four Important Classes of Organic Compounds Carbohydrates Lipids Proteins Nucleotides
5
Carbohydrates Chemical makeup: C, H, O 2Hydrogen:1Oxygen ratio Examples: sugars,starches and cellulose.
6
Monosaccharides 5-6 carbon sugars most common-C 6 H 12 O 6 (empirical formula) glucose, galactose and fructose Are isomers-same empirical formula but different structural formulas
