Update on Singapore Open Exchange (SOX) Kerk Chun Sing ccekcs@nus.edu.sg
2
Introduction Routing scene is dominated by the 3 incumbents – SingTel, Starhub and Pacific Internet. The incumbents peer among themselves and sell local transit as a separate Internet component. Local loops are provided by SingTel and Starhub which are expensive. Insufficient competition to drive the price down
3
Initatives IXPs to IXPs Have explored the feasibility of linking up SOX and HKIX using C2C subsea cable. Paid peering session between interested participants in both Internet Exchanges. Pay-as-much-as-you used concept for the trial. Unfortunately, it wasn’t successful. HKIX participants are more interested in getting traffic from US.
4
Initatives (cont) Distributed SOX Extending SOX layer 2 to another datacentre Advantages (SOX) – have more participants in the local peering scene Advantages (Datacentre) – provide value added service to their customer and drawing new customers to their datacentre. Discussing with i-STT (Equinix) on feasibility. To bet the costly local loop – Free Space Optics (FSO).
5
“Breaking the Cartel” Partnership with 1-Net 1-net -> people behind S-ONE, an early initiative to create a broadband environment in Singapore. 1-net itself is an IXP Peering between the SOX participants and 1-Net. p Trial phase will start when I get back…
6
Ever Present Difficult to get organisation into the SOX 1) Costly local loops – deterrent to interested parties 2) Who is in there ?? - Chicken and Egg issue
