High School Foreign Language educators need to address the following questions:  K-12 has to conform to standards-based instruction Certification and Training  Why do students choose to take a particular language? Easy? Career opportunities?  Recognize that their language is among LCTL: Need outreach to community $ Funding

Foreign languages in Colleges  About 1.5 million college students enroll in foreign languages.  Of those students enrolled in a foreign language class 823,000 Spanish 206,000 French 52,000Chinese 24,000 Arabic (11,000 in 2002) Source 2007 Modern Language Association (MLA)

Issues to consider for College Students of Foreign Languages  Retention at higher levels e.g. In Arabic 11% of enrollments were in advanced courses (25% Portuguese & 27% Russian)  Creative curriculum development  Mixed language learners Source 2007 Modern Language Association (MLA)
