Criteria Based Feedback

AifL overview It’s about encouraging independent learning. The use of learning outcomes and success criteria is at the start of this process.

Definitions LEARNING OUTCOMES Simple, specific statements which should derive from programmes of study. What teachers want pupils to have learned or be able to do by the end of a lesson or series of lessons. SUCCESS CRITERIA Statements of standards from which success in an activity can be measured. They are summary statements which illustrate exactly what it is that pupils must know/be able to do to achieve the learning outcome.

Example Learning outcome I will be able to describe the conditions of the trenches in the Great War. Possible success criteria –the ever present mud; –dampness; –smell of death because of rotting bodies; –constant presence of rats and lice.

Task 1 LEARNING OUTCOME To be able to perform the song “Till There Was You”. SUCCESS CRITERIA Sing the entire song without forgetting the lyrics. Perform the song without the need for the music/lyrics sheets. Maintain a steady rhythm throughout. Play the chord sequences accurately.

Choosing Success Criteria Success criteria need to be chosen carefully. They need to be specific and focussed. This leads to specific and focussed feedback.

Criteria based feedback Highlights strengths and development needs. Directs independent learning. Can be used in self and peer assessment.

Learning Outcome By the end of this workshop you will be able to… …develop criteria based comments which can be used in the assessment of pupil work.
