3 Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Advancement Emeritus Title The emeritus title shall be conferred, upon retirement, to Academic Senate members. Emeritus status shall be conferred, upon retirement, on academic appointees who are not members of the Academic Senate but who meet specific criteria established by the President.

4 Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Advancement EMERITUS TITLE Academic Senate Faculty: There are no special criteria for conferral of Emeritus status upon academic appointees who are members of the Academic Senate since such status is granted automatically upon retirement.

5 Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Advancement EMERITUS TITLE For the purpose of this policy, “retirement” includes: regular basic retirement under UCRP Lump Sum Cashouts from UCRP separation from service while receiving disability income from UCRP Emeritus status shall be granted automatically to Academic Senate members only when the effective date of any of these actions is within 120 days of separation from the University. Example: faculty who separate from UC to take another job (separate instead of retire) cannot request emeritus status after 120 days from separation

6 Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Advancement EMERITUS TITLE Non-Academic Senate Faculty An academic appointee who holds that position at the time of retirement and who is not a member of the Academic Senate may be nominated for conferral of the Emeritus title suffix. In these cases, the nominee shall be judged by the following criteria: a. at least ten years of University service; b. attainment of the highest rank in the individual’s title series; and c. evidence of noteworthy and meritorious contributions to the educational mission and programs of the University.

8 Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Advancement EMERITUS “BENEFITS” SPACE The University will provide space, when available, to emeritus professors who need space to continue their scholarly or creative work. The provision of such space shall not imply any claim upon a departmental budget. Professors who wish space assigned to them as emeritus professors should formally request it prior to their retirement, stating the purpose for which it is to be used.

10 Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Advancement Emeritus “Benefits” LIBRARY Borrower Account –may be obtained free of charge by faculty of the University, including retired employees and emeriti. Access Privileges –remote access to most online library resources is available to UCSF emeritus faculty. Note: the campus-wide photo ID card (CWID) is also your Library card.

11 Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Advancement EMERITUS “BENEFITS” Academic Senate Your membership in the Senate does not lapse upon conferral of emeritus status. Emeriti members of the Academic Senate retain membership in the departments to which they belonged at the time of their retirement. They do not have the right to vote on departmental matters. With the exception of personnel actions, Emeritus members of the department have the right to receive the same notice of meetings and access to relevant materials as other Academic Senate members, the privilege of the floor at those meetings, and the right to make their opinions known to the voting members.

13 Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Advancement Emeritus “Benefits” MEDICAL STAFF PRIVILEGES Reappointment and continuation of Privileges is subject to at least biennial review. Members who have not been involved in patient care or the clinical supervision of house officers for a period of two years shall automatically be transferred to Inactive Status. Inactive practitioners have no membership status or clinical privileges. Practitioners who are inactive may reapply for membership and/or clinical privileges as an initial applicant.

15 Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Advancement RECALL APPOINTMENTS Recall Appointments for Academic Appointees The University may recall to active service (up to 43%), on a year-to-year basis, academic appointees who have retired, provided such appointments are not in conflict with the terms of UCRP and/or University policy.

16 Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Advancement Recall Appointments An appointment may be made only for a period of one year or less and shall have a specific ending date. An appointment expires on that date, and no notice is required. Reappointments are not automatic. Following review, an appointment may be renewed. Campus administrators may enter a pre- retirement agreement with a faculty member age 60 (sixty) or older for a recall to service after retirement.

17 Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Advancement RECALL APPOINTMENTS Retirement plan regulations require that there generally be a break in service of at least 90 days between the retirement date and the date of the recall appointment start date. However, in no case may the recall date be earlier than 30 days following the retirement date.

19 Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Advancement Recall Appointments Recall – WOS Signifies that emeritus faculty member is still actively engaged and has academic responsibilities in their Dept or School; no compensation Example: faculty member who continues to serve on a committee

20 Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Advancement RECALL APPOINTMENTS Paid Recall Appointments Campus guidelines limit recall appointments to 43% or less Merit and promotion increases are not granted after retirement.

21 Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Advancement Recall Appointments Reemployment and UCRP Retirement Income UCRP WAIVER AND RELEASE FORM – a condition of employment after retirement All retirees receiving monthly retirement income who return to work must elect in writing whether to continue receiving retirement income (accept the waiver) or be reinstated as an active member of UCRP and earn service credit (decline the waiver). Your decision to return to work and whether you accept or decline the waiver can have a significant impact on your current and future income. Your choice also may affect your eligibility for health and welfare benefits.

22 Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Advancement RECALL APPOINTMENTS Benefits Recalled faculty may be able to contribute to the 403(b) Plan and 457(b) Plan. Health benefits are determined by the terms of the recall appointment. Since eligibility for benefits is a critical and complex issue, recall appointees should consult with the campus Benefits Office about how the recall appointment may affect their benefits eligibility. Recalled senate faculty regain voting rights on all departmental matters, except personnel matters, during the period of such recall service.

23 Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Advancement RECALL APPOINTMENT Reemployment and NIH/Grant Income When you move from active status to emeritus status, the NIH should be informed. You can only charge your grant at your recall salary rate. If your salary rate changes (i.e. is lower), the grant funds can be re-budgeted for other purposes. Contact your Contracts & Grants analyst before you retire.

24 Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Advancement Paid Recall – not in comp plan Salary rate is based on FY salary scale (scale 0) for rank/step at time of retirement Because you are not a member of the HSCP, you are not subject to comp plan rules/restrictions Currently, you are still required to report outside activities under APM 025

25 Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Advancement Paid Recall – comp plan Salary rate can be negotiated above Scale 0 Campus guideline: salary rate should not be higher than pre-retirement salary rate Because you are a member of the HSCP, you are subject to comp plan rules/restrictions Examples: –remitting funds from outside professional activities to your Dept per your Dept’l HSCP –All professional services income generated by HSCP members shall be managed by, accounted for and reported as revenue of UC
