Private It costs as much to provide an education to students at SUNY as it does at private colleges –Faculty salaries, facilities, services are comparable –Public education is not a ‘discounted’ product The difference is the state … NYS pays 60% of the cost of educating each undergraduate student

9 The State University of New York www.suny.edu/student Operation Inform 06 State of Savings Fall 2005… statistics according to NextStep Magazine: –1/3 of parents have not saved for their children’s education –50% have saved less than $50,000 –Only 27% of parents are willing to take out loans –55% indicate their children must share the burden by taking out loans –96% of parents believe they have not saved enough –61% of parents would encourage their child to attend a state college… and save money
