Context Map Feedback Session April 2007 David Millard Learning Societies Lab University of Southampton Ann Jeffery, Julie Watson, Kate Borthwick eLanguages University of Southampton

Personas Are these personas that you recognise from your experience? Are the tasks recognisable? –Louise (Learner) –Roland (Independent Learner) –Tom (Teacher Consumer) –Chrissie (Teacher Provider) –Lyn (Online Course Designer) –Ruth (Teaching School Assistant) Secondary School Teaching Assisstent Ruth has a son at the Sixth Form College where she works part-time as a teaching assistant. She helps 17 and 18 year old students develop online research skills. Part of her role is helping them to identify useful online learning resources that support their project work in various European languages and Cultural Identity

Concept Map Were you able to place all of your resources in the map? Was it easy to decide where to place your resources in the map?

Concept Map When placing resources how many concepts did you typically choose? Which of these branches did you always choose (leave blank if none) A) Classroom task type B) Learner Context C) Vocabulary D) Individual cultures and diffs E) Themes F) Skill G) Languages

Concept Map Did you ever choose to place a resource on a parent concept rather than the end of a branch? if so was it because: a) that was its natural place b) you couldn't distinguish between the sub-concepts c) it covered all of the sub concepts d) a sub concept you expected was not there e) other (comments please)

Concept Map Is the terminology in the map the same as you would use? If you disagreed then did you still recognise the terminology (was it unambiguous?) Does the concept map have the coverage that you would expect

Concept Map During the course of my task these are the ratings that I would give to working with the map: Layout of the concept map Attractiveness of the map tool Map tool was intuitive to work with I new where I was in the concept map tool Ease of navigation in the concept map tool Ease of backtracking and starting again in the concept map tool

Discussion Some Comments Raised: Tool –Could we combine concept maps and search tools? –Does the concept map tool show enough of the map at once? –Would it be useful to bookmark locations in the map? –Alternative views – lists and sublists – what about accessibility? Concept map approach –Disproportionate size of the concepts (many LOs under few concepts?) –Initial Filters (Language) might be useful –Multiple options for placement – how to optimise for people browsing?
