CHAPTER 7: STATIC ELECTRICITY IS PRODUCED BY ELECTRON TRANSFER Unit 3: Electricity

RECALL: ATOM – the tiny particles which make up all matter Read pages 228-230

CHARGES ON OBJECTS REMEMBER: Protons (p + ) have a Positive (+) charge Electrons (e - ) have a Negative (-) charge

When the Number of Protons equals the Number of Electrons, the atom is NEUTRAL NEUTRAL #p + = #e -

Neutral Atom Equal Number of electrons outside the nucleus as Protons inside the nucleus

POSITIVE NEGATIVE If electrons are REMOVED from a neutral object the object will become POSITIVELY charged - removed + If electrons are ADDED to the neutral object, the object will become NEGATIVELY charged - added - CHARGED OBJECTS

They are located INSIDE the nucleus and have a far GREATER MASS then the electrons which are located far from the nucleus and can therefore move between objects PROTONS DO NOT MOVE!

CHARGE TRANSFER Electrons (e-) are transferred by friction when different materials are rubbed together, the one who has the strongest hold on the e- can take electrons from the other.* Simulation Simulation

ELECTIRCITY Static Electricity Current Electricity

= Stationary refers to electric charges that can be collected and held in one place Questions: page 231 #1-6 Static Electricity

The removal of electric charge from an object Example: lightening “shocks” Simulation “John Travoltage” Read page 233-234Simulation “John Travoltage” ELECTRIC DISCHARGE:

Questions page 234 #2,4-7 Technologies and Static Electricity Lightening Rods Photocopiers Electrostatic air cleaner

The Coulomb (C): The SI unit of electric charge It takes the ADDITION or REMOVAL of 6.25 x 10 18 electrons to produce 1C of charge Lab 7-1C Questions page 237 #1,4,5,8,10-17,19

1. LIKE CHARGES REPEL 2. UNLIKE CHARGES ATTRACT 3. CHARGED OBJECTS ATTRACT SOME NEUTRAL OBJECTS Read page239 LAWS OF ELECTRIC CHARGES:

QUESTIONS PAGE 245 # 2,3,6,7,11 QUESTIONS PAGE 246 # 1-5, 7- 9, 11,14-16,20,21,24,25 REVIEW QUESTIONS

BLOOM BALL QUESTIONS Section 1: Static Electricity 1. What is Static Electricity? 2. What is a Coulomb? 3. What is Electric Discharge? Give 2 examples using illustrations.

BLOOM BALL QUESTIONS Section 2: Electrical Charge 1. Write down the 3 laws of electric charge. Use images to represent these. 2. Show how a neutral object can become attracted to a charged object either negative or positive. 3. List 3 careers and/or technologies that involve electricity.
