2. CONFIDENTIAAL2 Non-standard units of measure give approximate dimensions of an object. Customary units of measurement are the non-standard units. The system of measurement used in the United States is called the Customary system of measurement. Like, we can say that: The desk is as long as 6 of my hands. Today we will learn about the Customary units of measure for length.

4. CONFIDENTIAAL4 History Let us see the history of discovery of units of measurement. The Egyptians have evidence that proves that they may be the earliest civilization that discovered a standard unit for length. The Greeks used the width of 16 fingers to find one foot.

5. CONFIDENTIAAL5 The Romans adopted the foot from the Greeks and divided it into 12 sections which was called UNICAE, which came to be known as an inch. The yard was adopted by King Henry I in the 12th century. Many years ago, the US accepted this standard of measurement from London into our customary system.

6. CONFIDENTIAAL6 LENGTH: is a measure how long something is from end to end. For example: The length of my arm is 18 inches. Everyday objects are used as units of measure. It can be used to measure length, height and width.

7. CONFIDENTIAAL7 HEIGHT: The measurement of distance from bottom to top. For example: Her height is 68 inches. For example: The width of the stripe is 2 inches. WIDTH: The measurement of distance from side to side.

8. CONFIDENTIAAL8 Explore Customary Length to ¼ inch.  An inch (in.) is used to measure short lengths in the customary system.  You can use a ruler, yardstick or tape to measure in inches. CRAYON STEP 1: Place the ruler against one edge of the object. Line up the zero on the ruler with one end of the object.
