Observation and Assessment in the EYFS Practitioners must consider the individual needs, interests and stage of development of each child in their care, and must use this information to plan a challenging and enjoyable experience for each child in all areas of learning and development. Statutory Framework for EYFS (2012) p.6 1.7

Observation and Assessment in the EYFS Practitioners observe children to understand their level of achievement, interests and learning styles, and to then shape learning experiences for each child reflecting their observations. In their interactions with children, practitioners should respond to their own day-to-day observations about children’s progress, and observations that parents and carers share. Statutory Framework for EYFS (2012) p.10 2.1 & 2.2

4. How do we observe at TCS? Informal/spontaneous noticing (unplanned) Having eyes and ears everywhere, acting on what is observed. Participant observation (planned and unplanned) Observing as a participant, noting significant achievements demonstrated by children within adult-led experiences and within sessions where the adult has joined in with child-initiated play. Focus observation (planned) Stepping back and recording factually as much as possible of what you see and hear happening. The observer is not involved and children should be initiating their own learning

5. What can we observe? Children playing in different situations and contexts, alone or with others Children’s interactions with their peers, practitioners, their parents/carers Children’s interactions with resources and the environment (both indoors and outdoors) Children at different times of the day/days of the week Children’s personal choices, interests and concentration levels How children demonstrate learning and development linked to the prime and specific areas How children demonstrate the Characteristics of Effective Learning
