The Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification and Education (LACE), which goes into effect in 2015, impacts certification options for CNSs.
Must be approved by each state’s jurisdiction. National Council of States boards of Nursing adopted the APRN model ACT/Rules and Regulations….As long as regulatory requirements differ from state to state, each state border represents an obstacle to portability—potentially preventing access to professionals and access to care. The Consensus Model for APRN Regulation has the potential to harness this power by outlining regulatory requirements in licensure, accreditation, certification, and education that should be adopted by every state.

9. Clinical requirements
Criterion 4. CNS Curriculum The CNS program requires a minimum of 500 supervised clinical (clock) hours for master’s and post-graduate preparation.
CNS students must have an opportunity to practice the CNS role in settings related to the population/focus area and, if appropriate, specialty of the program under the supervision of a CNS faculty member and/or a qualified CNS preceptor. “Clinical (clock) hours” refers to hours in which the student implements the CNS role in one or more of the Three Spheres of Influence.

Each student is required to secure their own preceptor.
