Goal: 1. Explain the water rights the Mormons started in the west.

A. Background 1. Mormon religion started by Joseph Smith in New York in 1830.

A. Background 1. Mormon religion started by Joseph Smith in New York in 1830. 2. Moved to Illinois. 3. Smith was arrested in Nauvoo, IL and killed by an angry mob.

B. Brigham Young 1. Became leader of the Mormons and planned their trip to Utah.

C. The Mormon Trail 1. Went from Nauvoo to Salt Lake City. It paralleled the Oregon Trail.

D. Eastern vs. Western Water Rights 1. East - Landowners must maintain a free flow of water downstream. You could not increase or decrease the flow of water. Example: Mill pond

D. Eastern vs. Western Water Rights 2. West - Water could be taken from the stream as long as it was used for beneficial purposes. Necessary because of the dry climate of the west. Example: Farm irrigation.
