5 A. Background 1. Mormon religion started by Joseph Smith in New York in 1830. 2. Moved to Illinois. 3. Smith was arrested in Nauvoo, IL and killed by an angry mob.

6 B. Brigham Young 1. Became leader of the Mormons and planned their trip to Utah.

7 C. The Mormon Trail 1. Went from Nauvoo to Salt Lake City. It paralleled the Oregon Trail.

9 D. Eastern vs. Western Water Rights 1. East - Landowners must maintain a free flow of water downstream. You could not increase or decrease the flow of water. Example: Mill pond

10 D. Eastern vs. Western Water Rights 2. West - Water could be taken from the stream as long as it was used for beneficial purposes. Necessary because of the dry climate of the west. Example: Farm irrigation.
