Legume CHOICE: a simple tool for prioritizing legume interventions Alan Duncan Legume CHOICE Expert Meeting, Nairobi, Kenya Jan 13-15, 2015
2
Output 3: LegumeCHOICE – a decision support framework for enhancing the contributions of legumes to farmer livelihoods: Activity 3.1: Co-development of a prototype decision/discussion support framework with partners and beneficiaries for identifying legume entry points and best management practices, based on specific constraints and production objectives, towards anticipated expected benefits: Activity 3.2: Evaluation of trade-offs between legume integration scenarios, short and longer term benefits, and conflicting stakeholder interests, for integration in the decision support framework: Activity 3.3: Development of LegumeCHOICE – Version 1, an easy-to-use decision support framework, consisting of ICT- based and standard modules, for informing decision-making on enhancing the contribution of legumes to smallholder farming systems: Activity 3.4: Training of research and development partners in the use of LegumeCHOICE, including aspects of entry point identification and deployment and trade-off analysis:

Some ideas for Legume Choice decision support tool
5
Technology attribute scores
6
Context scores Kenya District 1: Crop products for sale in market Ethiopia District 1: Nutritionally constrained DRC District 1: poor soil fertility and soil moisture issues. Fuel needed
7
Using scores to prioritize What the community wants Which legume options might help

10
New thoughts What is the intervention – is it a legume type or is it an action to deal with an adoption constraint: –Seed or input supply –Disease control –Market intervention
11
Potential tool components “Farmer centred diagnosis” component Scoring exercise to settle on high priority legume types Prioritization of constraints and potential solutions Development of ranked list of intervention packages
12
Using survey to develop scores - exercise Are the functions exhaustive? What functions of legumes have we missed? Are the legume types exhaustive? What legume types have we missed? Develop prototype survey questions to: –Generate technology attribute scores (per site or global) for each function –Develop context scores for each function
