1:1 Technology Initiatives What is a 1:1 technology initiative? “An environment in which all students use computing devices, such as wireless laptops or tablets, in order to learn anytime and anywhere” (1:1 Computing, A Guidebook to Help You Make the Right Decisions) Implementation of 1:1 initiatives must focus on Improving teaching and student learning Providing quality instruction Using technology to enhance the pedagogy 1

“It’s Not About the Technology” Mooresville Graded School District (MGSD) Nationally recognized 1:1 Initiative, site visit as recommended by School Board Member Mrs. Lillie Jessie Lessons Learned It is not about distributing devices, it is about student learning Requires ongoing, sustained, and targeted PD Lessons centered around active participation in the learning Teachers model 21 st Century learning and global citizenship “It’s about changing the culture of instruction — preparing students for their future, not our past.” Dr. Mark Edwards 3

4 VDOE eLearning Backpack Initiative Freedom, Gar-Field, and Stonewall High Schools Steps taken to ensure success Collaborated with principals and Offices of Student Learning and Professional Learning Decided to start small and move slowly Improved wireless infrastructure/bandwidth Chose a device that would hold a charge for the entire school day and work with Microsoft Office 365 Provided appropriate and sufficient PD o November 2014 – 9 th - and 10 th -grade math teachers o January 2015 – 9 th - and 10 th -grade ELA teachers

6 VDOE eLearning Backpack Initiative Next Steps Distribute tablets to 9 th - and 10 th -grade students Make plans to expand to other content areas Collaborate with Office of Accountability to implement an evaluation metric to gauge success Make plans in FY 2016 to implement in 11 th grade and FY 2017 for 12 th grade Consider replicating in other schools On the horizon… o Occoquan Elementary School pilot (business partnership with IFAS and SPARK, initiated by School Board Member Mrs. Lillie Jessie)
