In the Classroom… Reading Block Whole Class
Introducing a new strategy or skill in a mini lesson ELA Modules Interactive Read Aloud Comprehension Tool Kit Text Talk (Vocabulary) Small group instruction with rotations Two teacher directed tables providing direct, explicit instruction on students’ levels and needs. Independent Stations Guided Reading Leveled books Decodables Fundations second dose Writing activities which support comprehension Multisensory phonics skill reinforcement Independent Activities

Fundations Phonological and Phonemic Awareness- tapping to blend and segment sounds Phonics/Word Study Vocabulary Sight Word Instruction- words will be spelling words Fluency Handwriting Comprehension Letters will be sent home at the beginning of each new unit

Reading Support Reading Specialist Push In
Supports students who may need additional support in one or more areas. Programs – Leveled Literacy Intervention, Primary Phonics, My Sidewalks on Reading Street, Fundations, Phonics for Reading, comprehension strategies with leveled books

FAST- one/one 3x /year PSF-Phoneme Segmentation Fluency NWF- Nonsense Word Fluency ORF – Oral Reading Fluency aReading and aMath –whole group 2x/year DRA2 – Developmental Reading Assessment -oral reading, retelling, comprehension, interpretation, reflection

How Can You Help? Become an active participant in your child’s learning. Make reading and writing fun…read a menu when out to dinner, read the Party City brochure, etc. Send your child to extra help consistently Send your child prepared Encourage independence Use the Reading Log as a springboard for conversation Vocabulary development
