JP Nuclear Materials Subprogramme 2 – Innovative high temperature resistant steels Marta Serrano (repl. by L. Malerba) CIEMAT SP2 Coordinator Workshop with Member States’ Stakeholders, Brussels, 10 Sept. 2014

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu Focus on components exposed to the harshest conditions (SFR, LFR) Gen IV Cladding tubes SFR: Temperature : 650ºC Diameter 10.73 mm Dose : > 150 dpa Thickness 0.500 mm Stress : up to 100 Mpa Thin tubes several meters long (R.E. Logé, CEA) Requirements: -High temperature (creep) resistance -High swelling resistance -Compatibility with coolant (liquid metal) Candidates: -Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steels -Creep strength enhanced ferritic (CSEF) steels (through termomechanical treatments) Both are also candidate fusion materials

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu ODS tubes can be fabricated … ODS cladding tube fabrication has been demonstrated: France, Japan, Russia, US … M. Le Flem (CEA) J. Ribis (CEA)

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu … but much R&D remains! Increase ductility (ODS tend to be brittle) Control microstructure (reduce anisotropy of thin-walled tubes) Reduce fabrication cost (powder metallurgy or new routes) Scale to industrial fabrication Fully qualify material for application as cladding …

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu Research in SP2 Monitoring national programmes  European activities on ODS/Enhanced creep alloys  “Catalogue” of available materials / producers Exploring new fabrication routes: ( FP7/MATTER )  Improvement of powder metallurgical process and optimization of final thermo- mechanical treatment  Conventional steel making techniques (introducing the oxide particles in the melt)  Spark plasma sintering techniques ODS cladding tubes characterization ( FP7/MATISSE, FP7/GETMAT follow-up )  Microstructural stability under high temperature and irradiation  Anisotropy studies (biaxial mechanical testing)  Screening activities under accidental scenario

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu ODS PP Capitalization of results within SP2 GETMAT (~1.5 M€ / 50%) ODS fabrication & characterisation 2008 2013 2011 2014 2015 2017 MATTER (~0.5 M€ / 50%) Optim. fabrication route MAtISSE (~450 k€ / 50% + 450 k€ in-kind) Clad. tube characterisation JPNM/SP2 (~40 PY/Y)

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu Next steps & links Identify new industrial partners Dissemination & international cooperation (INERI-USA, IAEA, NEA) Consider other innovative steels: CSEF 2015 2017 2020 Validated conventional and/or cheaper fabrication routes Production at industrial scale Optimised ferritic and martensitic ODS cladding tubes: controlled microstructure & mechanical properties Same materials as for fusion: operating conditions & form differ, but fabrication problems and requirements of radiation resistance are similar High temperature resistance is of use also for other energy technologies  links with other EERA JPs, EMIRI, ESTEP (for fabrication), …
