JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu Focus on components exposed to the harshest conditions (SFR, LFR) Gen IV Cladding tubes SFR: Temperature : 650ºC Diameter 10.73 mm Dose : > 150 dpa Thickness 0.500 mm Stress : up to 100 Mpa Thin tubes several meters long (R.E. Logé, CEA) Requirements: -High temperature (creep) resistance -High swelling resistance -Compatibility with coolant (liquid metal) Candidates: -Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steels -Creep strength enhanced ferritic (CSEF) steels (through termomechanical treatments) Both are also candidate fusion materials

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu ODS tubes can be fabricated … ODS cladding tube fabrication has been demonstrated: France, Japan, Russia, US … M. Le Flem (CEA) J. Ribis (CEA)
4
JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu … but much R&D remains! Increase ductility (ODS tend to be brittle) Control microstructure (reduce anisotropy of thin-walled tubes) Reduce fabrication cost (powder metallurgy or new routes) Scale to industrial fabrication Fully qualify material for application as cladding …

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu Research in SP2 Monitoring national programmes European activities on ODS/Enhanced creep alloys “Catalogue” of available materials / producers Exploring new fabrication routes: ( FP7/MATTER ) Improvement of powder metallurgical process and optimization of final thermo- mechanical treatment Conventional steel making techniques (introducing the oxide particles in the melt) Spark plasma sintering techniques ODS cladding tubes characterization ( FP7/MATISSE, FP7/GETMAT follow-up ) Microstructural stability under high temperature and irradiation Anisotropy studies (biaxial mechanical testing) Screening activities under accidental scenario
