Takes place on land where there are no living organisms

Ex: forest fires, volcanoes, hurricanes, etc

Major geographic communities with similar climates and vegetation

Photic zone = the portion that is shallow enough for light to penetrate
Ex: intertidal zones, estuaries, coral reefs

Aphotic zones = deeper waters that never receives sunlight
Ex: the abyss
