17 MAZE COMPETITION RULES

18 SISD LEGO Robot Maze Eastlake HS
Maze Rules Only items included in the kit can be used in construction. There can be no external interaction once robot has been placed on course, whether physically or wirelessly. The robot has a maximum height of 6.5 inches. The robot has a maximum width of 7 inches. The robot has a maximum width of 8 inches. No robot is allowed to be constructed in such a way to straddle maze partitions. There will be time scheduled between attempts and courses to allow for altering code and robot configuration. Each team will be allowed five minutes to complete each course. Reaching five minutes before completing the course or having a robot rendered incapable of completing the course will result in course failure. In the event of a course failure, the team will remain in their place in the rotation for that course. This will give the team another scheduled attempt on the same course. The robots will be placed and oriented by the building team, but must start with all parts behind the plane of the start line. The timing will begin once the “run” button is pressed and a program commences.

Maze Rules In order to successfully complete the course, the robot must completely pass the finish line and stop. If the robot is not completely over the line and/or does not cease its movement, the clock will continue to run. The end of all courses will be marked with a red line of electrical tape. The timer will be stopped once the robot successfully stops in the finish area. Base points awarded for successful completion of a course are 100 for the first course, 200 for the second course, and 300 for the third course. Total points will be calculated using the following equation: Score = BASE POINTS – COMPLETION TIME If a robot runs out of time, the score will be the distance traveled in feet. It is each team’s responsibility to provide additional batteries for their robots. Keep in mind that fresh batteries improve robot performance. Lithium and alkaline batteries are both fine. Lego Mindstorm advises against the use of rechargeable batteries due to the rate at which the kits drain the batteries, but teams are still welcome to use them. Any actions taken by teams that are deemed to be contrary to the spirit of the competition but that are not explicitly listed may still be deemed “against the rules” on a case-by-case basis by competition officials. Competition rules are subject to change until February 14, Teams are responsible for checking for updates or revisions to the rules.
