Tension between the U.S. and Britain was on the rise. The British were at war with France. The British began seizing American ships and forcing American sailors into military service. As a result: The U.S. refused to buy British good, hurting Britain’s economy. The British Government restricted trade with American merchants as well.

Decision for War Most members of Congress that voted for war were from the South and West. They were nicknamed the War Hawks They were led by Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun

The Americans in the South and West favored war because British trade restrictions had hurt Southern planters and Western farmers President James Madison asked Congress to declare war. The vote split with the South and West generally voting for war, while the Northeast was against the war
