1 Warm-up Study the photos and the map. Predict the economic effects of the oil resources on the national economy, the oil field owners, and ordinary Nigerians. Map is also on page 227. You will revise these predictions at the end of the lesson.

2 Nigeria and Oil Vocabulary Coup: an illegal takeover by force Concentrated: centered Nigeria’s Major Ethnic Groups Hausa-Fulani (primarily Muslim): live mainly in the north Igbo (primarily Christian): live mainly in the south Yoruba (primarily Christian): live mainly in the west

3 Create a Living Map 1.The classroom represents Nigeria. The closet door symbolizes the Niger River delta. The trashcan represents pollution. The boxes represents the resources(oil) 2.You all will be divided into the three main ethnic groups of Nigeria (Hausa-Fulani, Igbo, & Yoruba). 3.Go to the part of the room that represents where your ethnic group primarily lives. 4.As a class we will discuss how the distribution of people resources and pollution could lead to conflict. Questions to Guide the Discussion How might conflict start over the distribution of people? What issues may arise regarding the distribution of resources amongst the different ethnic groups? Who is closer to the resources? Who is furthest from the resources? If you are closer to the resources what else might you be closer to that you wouldn’t want to be close to? How will pollution effect all of the ethnic groups? How might pollution lead to conflict amongst the group? What group may be most affected by pollution? Explain. How do you think your ethnic group will be affected?

4 Paired Reading Read pgs. 226-227 with a partner and answer the following (write your answers in your notes): – How do Nigeria’s oil exporters benefit from Nigeria’s location and the location of its oil resources? – In the last paragraph, what evidence suggests that Nigeria had some economic difficulties before 2007?
