Review Quiz 1.6.752 + 9.837 1.82.635 - 48.08 2.84,252  42 4. 638 x 85 5. 10/3 - 2 6. 2/3 – ¼ 7. Sarah had picked up 18 apples in 3 minutes. How many apples had she picked in one minute? ________

Review Quiz 1.6.752 + 9.837 = 16.589 1.82.635 - 48.08 = 34.555 2.84,252  42 = 3,538,584 4. 638 x 85 = 54,230 5. 10/3 – 2 = 1 1/3 OR 4/3 6. 2/3 – 1/4 = 5/12 7. Sarah had picked up 18 apples in 3 minutes. How many apples had she picked in one minute? ________

7.EE.1 Factor, Expand and Combine Like Terms Activity 2

Agenda Introduction (Tuesday) – Topic – Focus – Outcome Warm-Up Activity (Tuesday) Activity 1 (Wednesday) Activity 2 (Thursday) Activity 3 & Closure (Friday)

Review Constant Term – The term in a simplified algebraic expression or equation which contains NO VARIABLE(S) – Example: -5 is the Constant Term in 9x - 5 Variable Term – The term in a simplified algebraic expression or equation which contains a VARIABLE – Example: 9x is the Variable Term in 9x - 5

Review Like Terms – Terms that have the SAME variables AND exponents – Examples: (1) 3w and 123w (2) 2x 3 and x 3 Unlike Terms – Terms that have DIFFERENT variables AND exponents – Example: x and 2x 2 Coefficient – A constant placed in front of a variable and is multiplied by that variable – Example: 7 is the coefficient of 7x

Activity 2

What is my Sum? Answer: 5 apples

What is my Sum? Answer: 5 oranges

What is my Sum? Answer: 2 apples + 3 oranges

Explanation Let the variable a represent the number of apples and o represent the number of oranges. Therefore, I can write a mathematical expression using the two variables: 2a + 3o Notice the DIFFERENT variables and colors, therefore these terms are UNlike Terms. Recall, UNlike Terms CANNOT be combined.

Activity 2

Tasks 1.Observe and replicate the illustration.illustration 2.Find the displayed card inside your bag. 3.Place the card in the appropriate position on the mat. 4.Identify the like terms and simplify the expression. 5.Continue to select cards and create algebraic expressions and simplify. 6.Prepare to share your work and model identifying and simplifying the expression for the class.

Return to Tasks

Group Discussion What operations must you perform to simplify? How can we simplify this expression? Create an example of an expression that cannot be simplified. Create an expression that simplifies to one term. When like terms contain fractions and decimals, how do you simplify them?

Summary The most important thing about simplifying algebraic expressions is to identify the like terms first. I have to remember to…follow order of operations, apply the operations to the term that follows, and be precise in my calculations. But the most important thing about simplifying algebraic expressions is to identify the like terms first.

Exit Ticket Complete the Exit Ticket and turn in at the end when dismissed from class.
