Areas of difficulty in the curriculum!
2
1. Number 2. Algebra 3. Shape and Space 4. Measures 5. Data
3
Strand Units: Place value – identifying numbers, rounding, estimating Operations – Addition, subtraction, multiplication & division (use of calculator is important is 5 th & 6 th class) Fractions Decimals & percentages Number theory (5 th & 6 th class)
4
5 th class - Multiply a decimal (up to three places) by a whole number, without and with a calculator 6 th class - Multiply a decimal by a decimal, without and with a calculator
5
5 th class - divide a three-digit number by a two- digit number, without and with a calculator 6 th class - divide a four-digit number by a two- digit number, without and with a calculator
6
Divide a decimal number by a whole number, without and with a calculator.
7
6 th class -divide a decimal number by a decimal, without and with a calculator.
8
5 th class - compare and order fractions and identify equivalent forms of fractions with denominators 2 – 12 6th class - compare and order fractions and identify equivalent forms of fractions
9
All children should be know the difference between a whole number, a proper fraction, an improper fraction and a mixed number
10
Add and subtract simple fractions and simple mixed numbers
11
5 th class - multiply a fraction by a whole number 6 th class - multiply a fraction by a fraction
12
5 th & 6 th class - express tenths, hundredths and thousandths in both fractional and decimal form
13
Divide a whole number by a unit fraction Understand and use simple ratios
14
5 th class & 6 th class - develop an understanding of simple percentages and relate them to fractions and decimals
15
5 th class - solve problems involving operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals and simple percentages 6 th class - solve problems relating to profit and loss, discount, VAT, interest, increases, decreases
16
5 th & 6 th class – identify simple prime and composite numbers
17
5 th class - identify square and rectangular numbers 6 th class - identify and explore square numbers
18
Strand Units: Number patterns and sequences Number sentences Directed numbers Rules and properties Variables (6th class only) Equations
19
5 th class –An introduction to positive and negative numbers in context 6 th Class Identify positive and negative numbers on the number line Add simple positive and negative numbers on the number line Activities: Use of thermometers Golfing Withdrawing money from – overdraft
20
5 th & 6 th class- properties and rules about brackets and priority of operation BOMDAS B- Brackets O - Orders M –Multiplication D – Division A – Addition S -Subtraction
21
Use of a letter in equations instead of a number - (frame used in 5 th class) http://ie.ixl.com/math/class-6/exponents-solve- for-the-variable http://ie.ixl.com/math/class-6/exponents-solve- for-the-variable
23
Strand Units: 3-D shapes 2-D shapes Symmetry Lines and angles
24
5 th class - identify and examine 3-D shapes and explore relationships, including tetrahedron (faces, edges and vertices) 6 th class - identify and examine 3-D shapes and explore relationships, including octahedron (faces, edges and vertices) 5 th & 6 th class - draw the nets of simple 3-D shapes and construct the shapes
25
5th & 6 th class – 1. make informal deductions about 2-D shapes and their properties 2. use angle and line properties to classify and describe triangles and quadrilaterals 3. identify the properties of the circle 6 th class only - construct triangles from given sides or angles
26
Constructing a circle continued next page
27
Mathematical set is important – should be checked frequently (compass and protractor are essential)
28
5 th & 6 th class – Tessellate combinations of 2-D shapes Classify 2-D shapes according to their lines of symmetry use 2-D shapes and properties to solve problems 6 th class only - plot simple co-ordinates
29
Strand Units: Length Weight Capacity Time Money Area
30
5 th class - estimate and measure length using appropriate metric units 6 th class - rename measures of length use and interpret scales on maps and plans 5 th & 6 th Class select and use appropriate instruments of measurement estimate and measure the perimeter of regular and irregular shapes To find the perimeter of a shape we add the length of all the sides together!
31
read and interpret timetables and convert 12 hour and 24-hour clock (digital and analogue) Adding and subtracting time – minutes with minutes, hours with hours. 6 th class explore international time zones explore the relationship between time, distance and average speed Dad’s Silly Triangle Distance= speed x time Speed= distance/time Time= distance/speed Cover the part of the triangle you’re looking for and the equation for it will show!
32
Calculate area of regular and irregular shapes. (length x width) Use of centimetres, meters
33
6 th class Surface area of 3D shapes i.e. Find the area of all faces and add together. o Measure using ares and hectares.
35
Only 1 digit in each box Always show rough work Use of a pencil and eraser only Calculator All sheets stuck into copy Practise of addition, subtraction and multiplication tables are essential. (Examples of games to play at home????!!!) Maths in the environment – home, shop, car etc. etc. Answer in a box Support from home is essential as 5 th & 6 th class maths forms the basis of the junior cycle programme....
