Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button located at the side of the phone (top, upper right). A “slide to power off” banner will appear in red at the top of the screen. To turn the phone back on, hold down that same button until the Apple icon appears.

You can tap a phone number almost anywhere in your Phone to make a call, including Contacts, Favorites, an email, a text message, a website, etc. You can also make a call using a numeric keypad by: – Tapping the green Phone button on your Home screen – Tapping the keypad – Enter the number you wish to call – Tap the green Call button You can also ask Siri to make your call. Hold down the Home button, wait until the screen comes up that says “What can I help you with?” and speak into the phone, telling Siri to “Call xxx-xxx-xxxx” You may be wondering…”What is Siri?”What is Siri?

The voicemail feature on your iPhone let’s you see a list of your messages and choose which one to listen to or delete. A red circle with a number in the center located in the upper right hand corner of the Voicemail icon (called a “badge”) tells you how many unheard messages you have (see image at the bottom of slide). The first time you tap Voicemail, you are asked to create a voicemail password and record your voicemail greeting. Listen to a voicemail message. Tap Voicemail, then tap a message from the list. You can listen to the voicemail again by tapping the arrow in the left hand corner of the voicemail. You can also delete the message by tapping the word “Delete” in the right hand corner of the voicemail

Contacts can be created by: – Tapping the Contacts icon – Tapping the + symbol – Enter the known information about the contact you are creating (e.g., name, phone number, email, etc.) – Tap Done Other Ways to Add Contacts: There are a number of ways to import Contacts from other applications and programs such as Facebook, Google, and iCloud. For instructions on how to do this, see page 114 of the iPhone 5s User Guide

Tap the green “Messages” icon on the Home screen Tap the blue square with the pencil that appears in the upper right corner of the app. Enter the phone number of the person you are texting in the “To:” field or tap the + sign on the right hand side of the screen to select one of your Contacts Type your message in the space to the right of the camera icon Tap Send To send a photo, tap the camera icon and either select a photo already taken or take a new photo

The Phone lets you run many apps at the same time. To view which apps you have running: – Double-click the Home button – You will see the multitasking display that shows all your running apps lined up in a row – Swipe left or right to see more. To enter a running app from the multitasking display, tap on it. – To close an app from the multitasking display, place a finger on the app and drag it up – this will close the app and it will no longer appear in your multitasking display Extend battery life by closing apps that you are no longer using while in the the multitasking display

The Phone’s Control Center gives you quick access to the camera, flashlight, brightness settings, timer, wireless and Bluetooth on/off control, audio playback controls, and many other features. You can also turn on/off AirDrop to exchange photos and other items with nearby iPhones running iOS 7. To read more about AirDrop, see page 31 of the iPhone 5s User Guide To open the Control Center, swipe up from the bottom edge of any screen (even the Lock screen). To close the Control Center, swipe down, tap the top of the screen, or press the Home button. Extend battery life by turning off certain services you are not using by accessing the Control Center (for example, turning off Bluetooth or AirDrop services when not in use can extend your battery life)

Some airlines let you keep your iPhone turned on if you switch to Airplane Mode. In Airplane Mode your phone cannot make calls or access WiFi networks. This is to avoid your Phone interfering with the navigational system on the plane. In Airplane Mode, you cannot make calls or use Bluetooth, or WiFi, but you can still take pictures/video, listen to music, play games, or use other apps that do not require network or phone connections. To turn Airplane Mode on/off – Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen to open the Control Center – Tap the symbol that looks like an airplane – You can also turn Airplane Mode on or off in Settings. – When Airplane Mode is on, the symbol of an airplane appears in the status bar at the top of the Home screen.

You can set wallpaper for both the Lock and Home screens on your Phone. Go to Settings Brightness & Wallpaper

You can change the brightness of the screen. Go to Settings Brightness & Wallpaper and drag the brightness slider If Auto-Brightness is on, the Phone adjusts the screen brightness for current light conditions You can also adjust the brightness in Control Center also Extend battery life by dimming the screen brightness or setting the Phone to Auto-Brightness

You can ask Siri to do a wide variety of things, from “set an alarm for 7am” to finding “where is the nearest Target store?” Siri can also open apps, turn services on and off. Siri understands human speech so you do not have to learn special commands or phrases to use Siri. To use Siri: – Press and hold the Home button until Siri beeps – Speak natural into the microphone end of your Phone (as you would when making a telephone call) – The top of the screen will display the text of what Siri heard you ask – Siri will respond below your question (text and audio response) – To ask another question, press the microphone button at the bottom (center) of the screen You can make changes to Siri (the gender of Siri’s voice, the language Siri responds to), by going to Settings General Siri For more information about what Siri can do, practice using Siri by asking Siri, “What can you do?”

To use Safari, which is your Phone’s Internet browser: – From your Home screen, tap on the app button that is a blue circle and looks like a compass – Enter a web address or search term in the search field at the top of the page. – Tap Search or a suggested term, or tap Go on the keyboard to search for what you typed. – If you do not want to see suggested search terms, go to Settings > Safari > Smart Search Field and turn off Search Suggestions.

The Phone’s Mail app works with email accounts based in Microsoft Exchange and other internet-based email account (Google Mail, Yahoo Mail). To setup your Phone to receive email using the Mail app: Go to Settings Mail, Contacts, Calendars Add Account Select the type of mail account you use from the list and enter the requested information - Your Name, Email Address, Email Account Password, and the Account Description you want to appear on the Phone in the Settings area (for example, “Personal Email” or “Work Email”

Tap on the Calendar app on your Home Screen (a white square that shows the current date in the center): Tap on the day of the month, week or year when you want to schedule an appointment or event Tap on the + symbol in the upper right hand corner of the screen to schedule an appointment or event An “Add Event” screen will open where you can enter the title of the event, the location, start and end times, and schedules alerts to remind you of the event.

You can use the Maps app to search for locations in lots of ways: by landmark (“Milwaukee Art Museum”), by area (“Riverwest”), by zip code, by intersection (“11 th and Highland”), by business (“Starbucks,” “Italian restaurant”) Tap on the Maps icon (a square on the Home screen that looks like a roadmap) Get driving directions – Tap the curved arrow in the upper left hand corner of the screen – Enter the Start and End locations. You can type the words “Current Location” in the Start field and the app will use your current location – On the next screen, your route will appear on a map. If multiple routes appear, tap the one you want to take. Tap Start to begin. To Hear turn-by-turn directions – After you select a route by tapping on it and tapping Start in the upper right hand corner of the screen, Maps follows your progress and speaks turn-by-turn directions to your destination.

From the Home Screen, tap Settings, and then tap iTunes & App Stores. Tap Create New Apple ID Choose the appropriate store by tapping Store, and select the country in which you are located. Tap Done and then tap Next to go to the next screen The next screen will display the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions. You can have the Terms and Conditions emailed to you for easier reading by tapping Send by Email. To do this, enter your email address, and then tap Send. To agree to the Terms and Conditions immediately, tap the Agree button, which is located on the bottom-right of the page. Tap Agree again when the confirmation appears. Once you agreed to the Terms and Conditions, you will need to enter an email address, password, and choose three security questions and provide answers to them. You will also enter date of birth and an optional rescue email (sends you instructions for how to reset your account if you forget the answers to these questions). The email address you provide will be your new Apple ID (which is what you will use to log in to the iTunes Store). Enter your email address, and then tap Next.

Next, you'll be required to enter your billing information. To choose a different Credit Card type, tap one of the available options, and then tap Done. You will not be charged until you make a purchase. Once you have completed all of the fields for your billing information, tap Next. You will then see a screen that says Verify Your Account. Tap Done, and check your email for a verification email from Apple. Open the email, and tap the Verify Now link enclosed in the email to activate your account. You will be taken to a secure page to enter your Apple ID and password to complete your account verification. Once you have entered your email address and password, tap Verify Address. Modify Your Account: – To modify or change your account information, such as Apple ID, payment information, or billing address, tap your account name located at the bottom of the page once you are signed in to the iTunes Store. When prompted, tap View Account. – You may be asked to enter your account password again for verification. – To sign out of your iTunes Store account, simply tap your account name at the bottom of the page in the App Store or iTunes Store.
