10  Mental Health Peer Workforce Project  17 case studies of mental health services employing peer workers  Online survey of peer workers  Literature scan  305 responses from peer workers  77% were female  Majority aged 40 plus  51% in NGO sector; 17% public hospitals  53% p/t & 29% f/t, 18% casual  91% qualifications from Certificate III to post graduate qualifications in mental health  22% held the Certificate IV in Mental Health

11 Key Project Recs  Establish a National Mental Health Peer Workforce Development Framework  Define career pathway options into and beyond mental health peer workforce  Expand use of peer workforce within the mental health service system, supported by appropriate structures e.g. training for both peer and non-peer staff  Build awareness, respect for and understanding within the broader mental health workforce of the role of peer workers  Develop a national approach to data collection on the mental health peer workforce  Support Australian research to build the evidence base for practice and increase understanding of the contribution of peer workers
