Academic Advising Transfer Students need to be advised in their AREA/MAJOR as soon after admission as possible. Transfer Center and Registrar’s Office personnel can provide general advising, but decisions about AREA/MAJOR/MINOR and career/professional planning must be handled by Academic Advisors. Transfer Students need to be engaged in their AREA/MAJOR/MINOR as soon as they are admitted and have a RACR.
3
RACR When a Transfer Advisee comes for advising, completed academic work of all kinds should be included on the Transfer Advisee’s RACR. Transcripts, score reports, etc., for all previous work must be submitted to the Transfer Center. Academic work in-progress should be reported to the Academic Advisor; Advisees should submit records as soon as grades, scores, etc., are available.
4
RACR “Unrestricted Electives: Additional Hours toward Degree” is at the BOTTOM of the RACR. Often, courses that are not included in the MSU transfer equivalency database are found here. Database: https://ssb.murraystate.edu/PBLC/ms_transfer.p_display_states Courses that have already been evaluated for transfer equivalency are found here. https://ssb.murraystate.edu/PBLC/ms_transfer.p_display_states If course is not in database, it has not yet been evaluated; contact the Transfer Center for help with evaluation.Transfer Center

TRN course Legend: Non-Equivalent TRN Courses: TRN 100 = Non Equivalent Lower Level Electives TRN 300 = Non Equivalent Upper Level Electives University Studies TRN prefix codes: CLL 100 = Oral Communication SCL 100 = Science HLP 100 = World’s Historical, Literary, and Philosophical Traditions MLL 100 = Mathematics SOS 100 = Social Sciences ESC 100 = Ethics, Social Responsibility, and Civic Engagement GAC 100 = Global Awareness, Cultural Diversity, and the World’s Artistic Traditions GED 100 = General Education Transfer

RACR Each TRN course listed on the RACR will include course title and institution. For the AREA/MAJOR/MINOR for which you are the Academic Advisor, you may substitute an appropriate course using the Course Exception form (Registrar/Forms). This process substitutes the course for just this student.Course Exception form IF a 100- or 200-level course is transferred IN to substitute for a 300+-level MSU course, the course transferred in does NOT count toward the required 300+-level hours toward graduation. See the first box on the RACR for this requirement. An Advisee may need additional upper-division electives to fulfill this requirement.
7
RACR If a course should be included in the Transfer Equivalency database, contact the Transfer Center. This process establishes equivalency for all students who transfer in that course.Transfer Center IF a 100- or 200-level course is transferred IN as equivalent to a 300+-level MSU course, the course transferred in does NOT count toward the required 300+-level hours toward graduation. See the first box on the RACR for this requirement. An Advisee may need additional upper-division electives to fulfill this requirement.
8
RACR For University Studies course equivalency evaluation, use the same process as for all other equivalencies. For University Studies course substitution, use the University Studies Substitution form, found on the University Studies website.University Studies Substitution form Question? Check with the University Studies Coordinator or with the department chair or program coordinator for the program in which the MSU University Studies course is housed.

Transfer Agreements/Waivers If you do not see University Studies on a Transfer Student’s RACR, look in the first box for a reference. Ex.:

Planning Ahead Transfer Students may be assigned to Academic Advisors who are not on campus due to summer, leave, sabbatical, travel, etc. Make arrangements for Chair, Program Coordinator, or another Academic Advisor in your program to advise, and be sure that Transfer Advisees are re-routed. If possible, respond to e-mail to facilitate re- routing. Use “Vacation Responder” on e-mail and “Away” message on office phone.
11
Planning Ahead / Transfer O The Transfer Center will advise a Transfer Advisee to contact Academic Advisor OR Department Chair/Program Coordinator as soon as the student is admitted and has a RACR. Transfer O (orientation) sessions are scheduled throughout the year. Transfer Advisees should be advised as soon as possible, but they MAY need advising at Transfer O.
12
Transfer O Transfer Orientations are scheduled for 17 April, 06 June, 24 June, 15 July, 07 August. Departments will be contacted in advance to arrange for Transfer Advising (early afternoon 1:30-2:45). After Advising, send to Library for Checkout.
