 Update your Table of Contents  Write your homework – leave it to be stamped  Get your Ion Cheater Chart homework out to be checked – we will go over it to make sure it is correct! DateSession # ActivityPage # 10/1- 10/2 14 Elements, Compounds, Mixtures & Solutions Note Guide - Quick Comprehension Stations on the back 25 Compounds, Mixtures & Solutions Reading 26

Group/Family Name Alkali Metals Alkaline Metals Boron Family Carbon Family Nitrogen Family Oxygen Family HalogensNoble Gases Group/Family Number 12345678 # of Valence Electrons 12345678 # of empty spaces for e- 76543210 Giver or Stealer of e- GGG BOTH SSSN/A Type of ion formed CATION BOTHANION N/A Charge of ion formed +1 +2+3+4/-4-3-2N/A Group # they bond with 7654321N/A

 Atoms give away or steal electrons in order to happy and stable with a full valence shell! ◦ Atoms with less than 4 valence electrons tend to lose electrons. ◦ Atoms with more than 4 valence electrons tend to gain electrons.

 Ionic = Transfer electrons; between a metal and a non-metal  Covalent = Share electrons; between 2 non- metals  Use the Periodic Table to determine if the following compounds are ionic or covalent: ◦ SO 2 ◦ CaCO 3 ◦ HCl ◦ NH 3 ◦ NaOH

 Molecule = 2 or more atoms joined (can be the same element or more than one)  Compound = 2 or more different elements joined in a chemical reaction  Mixture = 2 or more substances combined  Solution = A type of mixture that looks the same throughout

 Pure substances made of only one type of atom  MUST be on the Periodic Table OF ELEMENTS  Combine to form all other types of matter  Examples:  Silver  Calcium  Oxygen

 Single atoms of ONE pure element  Molecules of ONE pure element

 Two or more elements joined during a chemical reaction  Must be combined in specific ratios  Chemical Change/Reaction  Examples:  Water  Salt  Sugar

 2 or more ELEMENTS that are CHEMICALLY bonded to one another

What is evidence that a chemical reaction is happening again?

 Combines 2 or more substances without producing a chemical reaction = PHYSICAL CHANGE  Different throughout = heterogeneous  Basic mixtures can be separated easily  Examples:  Soil  Fruit salad

 2 or more SUBSTANCES MIXED together, but NOT chemically bonded.

 A type of HOMOGENOUS MIXTURE - same throughout = STILL A PHYSICAL CHANGE  Can be solids, liquids or gases  Solute- substance being dissolved  Solvent- substance doing the dissolving  Examples:  Salt water  Lemonade Salt = Solute Water= Solvent Salt Water= Solution

 It is also a mixture of 2 or more SUBSTANCES, but the particles will be evenly distributed throughout (homogenous)

 A type of HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURE – different throughout  Particles will not dissolve, (insoluble) or are suspended  Examples:  Face washes, hand sanitizer  Snow globe

 A type of HOMOGENEOUS SOLUTION  Have an “in between” texture  Examples:  Jell-O  Pudding

 Read the “Compounds, Mixtures, and Solutions article, and use it to answer the questions.  You may read & complete the questions with your table/group.

 Visit each station and describe what you see using as many vocabulary terms from the article as you can…I want scientific explanations – (that means use vocabulary!!)  Each station has multiple explanations…ticket time!!

 NONE!!

 Update your Table of Contents  Write your homework – leave it to be stamped  Take a Warm-Up from the front counter, complete both sides using your notes & your group…review/quiz each other when you finish. DateSession # ActivityPage # 10/3 & 10/6 15 Element, Compound, Mixture, Solution Warm- Up/Review 27 CSI Sarnelli: Separating a Solution Lab Guide 28

 Heterogeneous = different throughout  Homogeneous = same throughout  Molecule = at least 2 atoms bonded together  Compound = at least 2 different atoms bonded together  Mixture = at least 2 substances mixed; heterogeneous  Solution = at least 2 substances mixed; type of mixture that is homogeneous

Lab Roles: Leader – Reads the informational portions and directions for the lab Supply Manager – manages materials Discussion Leader – Reads the questions and begins a discussion Speaker – designated spokesperson to answer questions for the group when they are called on THE ENTIRE LAB SHOULD BE COMPLETED & CLEANED UP IN 20 MINUTES & YOU SHOULD BE IN YOUR SEATS READY TO DISCUSS THE RESULTS!!

Clean-Up: 1. Throw your chromatogram paper in the garbage. 2. Dump the water into your sink. 3. Bring your EMPTY cup & stick back to Ms. Sarnelli. 4. Set the graduated cylinder next to the sink where you found it.

 I will show you a picture and your team will have 15 seconds to figure out what it is and write it down on your white board…YOU GET ONE CHANCE!  Your answer will be one of the following:  Element = E  Compound = C  Mixture = M  Solution = S  Your team will get a token in your cup for each picture you get correct!  Goal: For your team to collect as many tokens in your cup as possible to win the candy!

 Read the directions and complete the “Sum It Up”  Make sure your name is on it, make sure it is legible, and make sure it is in the basket before you walk out the door!

 Chemistry Test 2 coming up soon!! ◦ A-day: Monday, Oct. 13 th ◦ B-day: Tuesday, Oct. 14th  Start Reviewing!!

 Update your Table of Contents  Write your homework – leave it to be stamped  Get a project guide off the counter and start to review the requirements. DateSession # ActivityPage # 10/7- 10/8 16 Adopt-An-Element Project Guide 29

 Formal project grade 65%, SO READ THE DIRECTIONS!  Use the rubric on the back as a checklist to make sure you have earned the grade that you want.  Make sure your work is of the highest QUALITY & ACCURACY!!!  You MUST have your Baby Book with you in class on the due date, so plan ahead!  Use a Chromebook to research and/or type the required items & share what you have with yourself so you can access it at home!  SIGN FOR THE CHROMEBOOK YOU ARE USING

 Update your Table of Contents  Write your homework – leave it to be stamped ◦ REMEMBER: The study guide is due BEFORE the test!! ◦ The test is next class! ◦ Project due in 2 classes! Be sure to have it with you the day it is due! DateSession # ActivityPage # 10/9 & 10/10 17 Search & Rescue Answer Sheet 30 Study Guide for Chemistry Test 2 31

 The test is on Sessions 9-15  There will also be 10 review questions on information from the last test  I will have tutoring on Monday morning & Tuesday morning next week before the test 8:15-8:45…bring specific questions!  Complete the Study Guide & study your notes!

 Use the folders to create a barrier between you and your table partner  You need a pencil, a periodic table, and your calculator – put everything else away

 Work on your Adopt-An-Element Baby Book  If you use a Chromebook make sure to SIGN IT OUT!  SIGN OFF OF IT AND PLUG IT INTO THE CORRECT SPACE WHEN YOU RETURN IT!
