Mean, Median, Mode, and, and Range By: Jacob Fowler and Cassie Gallman
3
Mean Mean is an average found by using division. The items in data set are added together, and then the sum is divided by the numbers of items. Step 1: Add all the numbers together. Step 2: Then divide the sum by how many numbers there are. Step 3: Then you will get your answer. EX. 3,4,7,1,6 1. 3+4+7+1+6= 21 2. 21/5= 4.2
4
Median Median is the middle number in an ordered data set. Step 1: List the numbers from least to greatest or greatest to least. Step 2: Find the number in the middle. Step 3: If there is no median find the mean of the two middle numbers. Ex. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 3 is your Median
5
Mode Mode is the number that occurs most often in a data set. Step 1: Look at the numbers, look to see if any occur more than once. Step 3: Then that number is your Mode. EX. 2, 3, 7, 4, 7 7 is your Mode
6
Range Range is the difference between the highest number and the lowest number. Step 1: You put the numbers in order from least to greatest. Step 2: You subtract the littlest number from the biggest number. That is your Range. Ex. 3, 2, 4, 7, 10 1.3, 2, 4, 7, 10 2.10 – 2= 8
7
Box and Whisker Plot Median and range is also used in box and whisker plots.
8
Box And Whisker Plot In a box and whisker plot the MEDIAN is used to find the number in the middle of the box and whisker plot. In a box and whisker plot, RANGE is used to find the difference between the highest and lowest number of the box and whisker plot.
