1 2) Writing Centre  What is the writing centre?  When/where/who?  How do I book an appointment?

2 2) Writing Centre What is the writing centre?  Common feature of universities in USA  Place where you can come to talk about your writing in a comfortable, supportive atmosphere  Help you with writing in any subject at any stage of the writing process (prewriting, drafting, editing, revising and publishing)  Not a drop-off or proofreading service  Main purpose is to help you help yourself to become a better writer  Suitable for all students – a writing ‘gym’  Looking for long-term improvement, not short-term

3 ‘I’ve got a 1000- word essay due tomorrow, can you help me to check it?’ Is the same as this man going to the gym and saying… ‘I’m going to enter a body building competition tomorrow, can you help me get ready?’

4 Better would be: ‘I’ve just been given an essay which is due in 4 weeks, how can I brainstorm ideas?’ ‘This a recent essay, what do you think about the topic sentences in this section?’ ‘This is the feedback on my last writing assignment, what does this part mean?’ Which are similar to… ‘I want to lose 5kg before Christmas, please help.’
