Edgar Allan Poe’s Death (Persuasive Essay) Feedback
Do you have a title? Poe’s Death Essay Loss of a Literary Genius Students take notes on feedback. Teacher will use ELMO and the PowerPoint to explain.
2
Introduction HTBT = Hook, Topic, Background, Thesis
EXPOSITORY vs. PERSUASIVE: know the difference. It affects your thesis! Have a THESIS! Ex: Have you ever wondered how the famous writer, Edgar Allan Poe died? Poe died by alcohol and other side affects. In the following paragraphs I will explain why I believe this is the reason Poe died.
3
Introduction sample While death is a part of life, the reasons people die can cause great problems. Some die from drug overdoses and others naturally from old age. The demise of the morbid writer Edgar Allan Poe in the 1800’s has bemused society with various theories. However, despite opposition, Poe’s death was caused by a very lethal virus known as rabies.
4
Body A (Your stance/claim/argument)
3rd person = formal. Do not use the 1st or 2nd person (I, me, my, our, we, us, your, you) TS is not your EX! Don’t end paragraph w/ a quote. (Add CM and explain). TS = A few reasons support the fact that Poe died from ___. In ___’s article, it states that “…” (Silverman 253) + CM, EX2 + CM, CS
5
Body B: The Counter-argument
Acknowledge and refute the counter-argument. Use proper transitions (However, On the other hand, While….) TS = However, some feel that Poe’s death was not due to ___, but rather his demise was caused by ___. EX1+CM, EX2+CM, CS
6
Conclusion RSE = really strong ending (what’s wrong?)
Ex: Poe might have died from rabies, but then again there was no proof of an animal bite. Another possibility of how he died was excessive drinking because his body did not like the wine, he became sick after drinking alcohol. I am neutral on how Poe died because both theories have details but not enough proof. Maintain your stance! Call to action?
