4 2.1 DRAFTS How did the 2.1s go? Did the meetings help? (those of you who came to them) Not many people came to office hours 17 people emailed me late Thursday night/Friday morning I tried to get to all of them – I had a paper due myself

5 2.2 DRAFTS The 2.2 draft isn’t technically due until the start of May (May 1 st ) That may seem like a lot of time (pun intended) Start revising now Come to my office hours/make an appointment Let’s work on it together!

7 LET’S MAKE AN ARGUMENT! We can write example paragraphs/create an outline together as a class

8 INTRODUCTION What do we need in an introduction paragraph for the 2.2? Hook – grab reader’s attention Shocking statistics? Thesis statement State the problem Why this problem should be fixed Background information Credibility (if you have any) Narrow the focus Discuss what you’re NOT going to cover Preview of what youre going to talk about Facts about topic (general) Subtopics – the points you’re going to make

9 BODY PARAGRAPHS What do we need in the body paragraphs FOR our argument? Topic sentence State the main point of the paragraph Providing more information Tie paragraph back to thesis Evidence and commentary Evidence - Direct quotes, statistics, sources Commentary - Expanding upon the evidence Personal experience Expand/use it to tie into the evidence you’ve given Transition sentence/Concluding sentence

10 COUNTERARGUMENT What do we need in the body paragraphs AGAINST our argument (counterargument)? Topic sentence What is the counterargument? Claims/why are they opposed? Supporting with evidence Sources, statistics Relate the claims to the points you’ve made Refute them Why is your argument still better?
