1 English 1201 Within Reach

2  Point of view – the perspective established by the narrator of a literary work.  first-person -- a character narrates the story. In this instance, the main character conveys the incidents he encounters, as well as giving the reader insight into himself as he reveals his thoughts, feelings, and intentions.  third-person -- told from the narrative perspective where a personage who is not a character in the story, tells the story.

3 Sub-types  third-person limited -- the author’s knowledge of a character is limited; uses he/she/they and can describe only what can be seen or heard  third-person omniscient -- the author knows everything about the characters including their feelings, thoughts, et cetera. The narrator moves from one character to another as necessary to provide those character’s respective motivations and emotions

4 Discuss how diction creates a serious tone in the selection “A secret lost in the water”.
