CONFIDENTIAL3 MIXED NUMBERS A Mixed Number indicates the sum of a whole number and a fraction. A number like 11/3 is an example of a mixed number. 1 1/3 = 1 + 1/3

CONFIDENTIAL4 Improper Fraction If the numerator is greater than the denominator, then the fractions are called improper fractions. Mixed Numbers can written as improper fraction.

CONFIDENTIAL6 MIXED NUMBERS AS IMPROPER FRACTIONS Draw a model for 4 1/6, then write 4 1 as 6 Improper fractions. Since the mixed number is greater than 4, draw 5 models that are divided into 6 equal sections to show sixths. Then shade four wholes and one sixth.

CONFIDENTIAL22 Review A mixed number indicates the sum of a whole number and a fraction If the numerator is greater than the denominator, then the fraction is called improper fraction. To convert a mixed number into improper fraction, multiply the whole number and denominator and to the product add the numerator. To convert an improper fraction into a mixed fraction, divide the numerator by the denominator and use the remainder as the numerator of the fraction.
