5 UNIT 3: GUIDING QUESTIONS  What molecules are found in all living organisms?  Why do we need to eat a balanced diet that contains a variety of foods?

6 OBJECTIVES  SWBAT articulate the basics of biochemistry.  SWBAT define macromolecule and identify the four biological macromolecules found in ALL living things.  SWBAT identify the monomers that compose each of the major macromolecules.

7 INTRODUCTION  Biology is the study of LIFE “Bio” means life  Therefore, we will begin our study of life by learning about the molecules found in all living things.

8 BIOCHEMISTRY  Biochemistry is the chemistry of the living world. All living things use the same basic compounds for their metabolic (life) processes.  Biochemical cycles (such as photosynthesis, digestion, reproduction) require biological molecules as reactants and products.

9  Atoms: Basic unit of a chemical element  Elements: Substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance and are the basic components of matter  Matter: Physical substance that occupies space and possesses mass DEFINITIONS

10  Basic unit of matter ATOMS + ELEMENTS  A pure substance containing one type of atom

11  Carbon is found in all organic compounds. It is the basic element of all molecules found in living things. CARBON: YOU GOTTA HAVE IT

12  Key Point #1: Two or more atoms of any element chemically bonded together are known as a molecule MOLECULES

13 POLYMERS  Key Point #2 : Polymers are large molecules made up of many smaller, repeating units known as monomers  “Poly” means many  “Mono” means one  Another name for polymers is macromolecules  “Macro” means large

14 MACROMOLECULES  Key Point #3: The four macromolecules found in all living organisms are proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids Each of the four macromolecules contains the elements carbon (C), oxygen (O), and hydrogen (H) Organic molecules

15 PROTEINS  Key Point #4: Proteins are made up of amino acids The amino acids are joined together by peptide bonds Amino acids contain carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and also nitrogen.

16 CARBOHYDRATES  Key Point #5: Carbohydrates are made up of monosaccharides Another name for carbohydrates is polysaccharides Carbohydrates only contain carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen

17 LIPIDS  Key Points #6: Lipids are most commonly made up of fatty acids and glycerol One of the main types of lipids is fats, also known as triglycerides (1 glycerol, 3 fatty acids) Fats can be saturated or unsaturated Lipids contain mostly carbon and hydrogen, but also oxygen.

19 NUCLEIC ACIDS  Key Point #7: Nucleic acids are made up of nucleotides Every nucleotide contains a sugar, phosphate, and a nitrogen base

20 SUMMARY  All cells contain proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids  Proteins are made up of amino acids  Carbohydrates are composed of monosaccharides  Many lipids are made up of fatty acids and glycerol  Nucleic acids are composed of nucleotides
