2 Background 2013 Governance review – absence of a system for the identification, compilation and dissemination of learning from country cluster response GNC work plan 2014/2015 – Pillar 4 IM and KM – IM centers around managing appropriate nutritional and coordination information – KM focuses on capturing, developing, sharing and using relevant knowledge and experiences KM project – ENN-led 1 year project – focus on 2 activities (out of 4) in the WP – Complement other IM/KM activities

3 Project overview Aim: to capture experience and learning at the country cluster level and build capacity for documenting learning Phase 1 (Jan-Mar): Scoping Phase 2 (Apr-November): Lesson capture (including 2 field visits) Output: 4-6 case studies (aim to publish in a forthcoming issue of Field Exchange)…

4 Phase 1: Scoping study Initial document review conducted Discussions held with GNC-CT and SUN- 12 potential themes of focus identified

5 Potential themes Cluster activation Cluster deactivation Leadership Coordination Governance Assessment/IM/data use Planning Preparedness Programme delivery Human resources Capacity development Funding Key questions to be answered identified around each

6 On-line survey On-line survey completed to get feedback on list of potential themes – 22 respondents: IMOs, NCCs, RRTs – Priority themes: assessments, leadership, funding, programme delivery, capacity development, planning/preparedness – All were interested to contribute to the KM project – Majority know gov and partner staff interested to contribute Identified countries for follow up based on – Presence of both NCC and IMO in a country – Interesting suggestions written into survey – Africa/Asia representation – Variety of contexts (L3, chronic emergency) – Wide range of interest in thematic areas Follow up interviews: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Ethiopia, Pakistan, Philippines, Somalia, and S Sudan Inception report at end of Phase 1 to be shared

8 Phase 2: Lesson capture process Based on ENN’s experience with the Syria Field Exchange and Nutrition Exchange Interviews with NCCs/IMOs to explore their experiences and key areas of learning – started in scoping phase Document review (ENN) to understand the narrative and ‘story’ Initial thinking and development of draft outline (ENN) Shared with country for feedback NCCs/IMOs/country teams to develop 1st draft – ENN to support writing sections on needs basis- context specific- iterative process Review, comments, dialog, further development of the document Expect 7+ drafts per country Country visits (2) Level of ENN effort: 10 days per country (6 countries)

9 Project management GNC-CT to provide project management and oversight SAG and IM/KM taskforce regularly updated on activities/progress

10 Issues to consider NCC/IMO time constraints High NCC/IMO turnover Wider stakeholder engagement is crucial (government, UNICEF, OCHA, SUN, REACH, CSO etc.)

11 Questions What do you think of the process? What learning would you like to see coming out of the process (headline issues) for global/HQ level? How do we support NCCs/IMOs to commit time to documenting learning? Country visits have been discussed for S Sudan and Philippines, do you feel these would be appropriate? We welcome engagement….
