2 SSSP Background The Student Success Act of 2012, signed by Governor Brown on September 27, 2012, established the Student Success and Support Program (SSSP). The SSSP replaces the former Matriculation program. Key recommendations require students to complete core matriculation services: Declare a course of study early and complete orientation, assessment, counseling/advising, educational planning and participate in follow-up services. The Act provides categorical funding to complete these tasks and establishes enrollment priorities for different groups of students and ties academic standing to the BOGFW program

3 SSSP and Matriculation Differences
The former Matriculation program was established in 1986 through the Seymour-Campbell Act. Beginning in 1987, community colleges were required to provide the processing of admission applications, orientation and pre-orientation services, assessment and counseling upon enrollment, and post-enrollment evaluation of a student’s progress. In , the last year of Matriculation funding, Hartnell College received $461,000 to support program activities. In , the first year of Student Success and Support Program funding, Hartnell College is expected to receive no less than $1,053,000 to support program activities.

4 SSSP Oversight The SSSP+SEP Steering Committee consists of the Chairs of the SSSP and SEP workgroups, the Vice President of Student Affairs and the Dean of Institutional Planning and Effectiveness. The group formed in late Spring 2014 to provide oversight over the development of the SSSP and SEP. The group meets weekly. The group also developed the Timeline for SSSP-SEP-BSI Plan Completion. The timeline has been shared in numerous committee and governance council meetings. The Steering Committee supports the development and implementation of the plans and helps to leverage resources to insure completion by the required deadline.

6 SSSP Committee The SSSP Committee consisted of the following individuals: Daniel Perez, English Faculty Nina Vasquez, Math Faculty Dr. Mark Sanchez, Dean, Student Affairs Dr. Romero Jalomo, VP, Student Affairs Liz Estrella, Counseling Faculty Tony Anderson, Counseling Faculty Mitzi Alexander, Counseling Faculty Mary Dominguez, Dean, Enrollment Services Bronwyn Moreno, MESA Coordinator Erica Lomeli, Student Wade Grant, Institutional Data Analyst Renata Funke, Dean, King City Ed. Center The SSSP Committee met every Thursday over the summer to develop the first plan draft by August 15, 2014 Refinements to the plan were made after receiving feedback from participatory governance councils and committees starting August 18.

7 SSSP Committee Responsibilities
Members of the Student Success and Support Program planning committee are: Responsible for the planning, development, implementation, and monitoring of the plan. Include an appropriate mix of administrators, faculty, classified staff, and students. Include participants involved in other institutional planning efforts, such as the Student Equity Plan and Basic Skills Initiative Action Plan.

8 SSSP Components The SSSP Plan focuses on the College’s approach to serve incoming students in the following core areas: Orientation Assessment testing Counseling- the development of a student educational plan (SEP) Follow up services for at-risk population students The plan also focuses on the integration of institutional research and technology in identifying and addressing the needs of students on campus. The Chancellor’s Office requested these elements as a part of the plan to ensure there was institutional integration focused on the needs of the students.

9 SSSP focus on policies & procedures
The final section of the SSSP plan focuses on the College’s policies pertaining to: Exemption policy from SSSP services Appeal policies Prerequisite procedures Plan for professional development Coordination with Student Equity and other planning efforts Coordination in Multi-College Districts The Hartnell College SSSP plan outlines how we deliver services in the core areas including how we plan on enhancing these services including utilization of the new interactive online student orientation required for all incoming students. Furthermore, the SSSP plan outlines the work completed by instructional faculty, counselors, and administrators to develop and implement program elements focused on enhancing student success such as the “Early Support Program”

10 SSSP Highlights In conclusion, the SSSP plan outlines how the college will: Expand and strengthen core services for student success – orientation, assessment, counseling/advisement, and follow-up services Increase collaboration with high schools, adult schools, one-stop career centers, and other community based organizations Increase the use of technology to ensure efficiency in serving students focused on college preparation and educational planning Ensure professional development for faculty, staff, and administrators directly linked with the delivery of SSSP services Through the use of research identify areas of greatest need focused on increasing institutional student success Continue to engage in institutional dialogue and planning to develop programs and services focused on increasing educational success

College Pathways Coordinator (1.0 FTE, classified position) Facilitate student success services in K-12 (particularly at high schools) Placement Testing Coordinator (1.0 FTE, classified position) Expand English and math placement testing services SSSP Administrative Assistant (1.0 FTE, classified position) SSSP Specialist (faculty assignment, stipend) Adjunct counselors to expand delivery of core SSSP services (at high schools and at college locations) Academic Follow-up Services Coordinator (1.0 FTE, faculty position) Coordinating services for basic skills students and students subject to academic probation/dismissal, implementation of early alert Program Assistant II – Academic Follow-up Services (1.0 FTE, classified position) Career Counselor (1.0, faculty position) Assist students who have not identified an education goal and course of study
