Missouri applied for admission as a slave state Maine applied as a free state Temporary solution that kept a balance of power in the Senate Slavery was then prohibited north (above) of the latitude 36°30’, which is the southern border of Missouri

Compromise of 1850 California’s constitution made it a free state
Passed the Fugitive Slave law, which required that runaway slaves be returned to owners Slave trade ended in Washington DC and owners could keep what they owned Texas could not annex NM

Kansas-Nebraska Act 1854 “Popular sovereignty” would decide if a new state would be free or slave (i.e. Kansas and Nebraska were seeking statehood) Fighting occurred as each group tried to gain the popular vote (be in control)- “Bleeding Kansas”
