2 Foster Youth and Homeless Education
Tutoring Tutor Connection and Ed Ladder Student Success College and Career Camp Barrett Foster Youth and Homeless Education Services has been working to ensure that all students in foster care who are attending JCCS schools are identified and are referred to our services programs . These services include our 2 in home tutoring models, Tutor Connection which trains pre-teachers about the needs of student sin foster care and then assigns them as a tutor to a student tin foster care, and Ed Ladder a non profit SES provider. All of Ed Ladders tutors are credentialed teachers In addition, we are brining information from our College Connection Advisory Counsel to Camp Barrett in December. The CCAC provides information, resources and access to vocational and post secondary opportunities. Last, we are working diligently to ensure that Trauma Informed practices are infused through out the COE with a particular focus on JCCS that serve children in foster care. Trauma can under mind all of the best efforts of our educators because it impedes learning in such a pervasive way. We hope to provide meaningful training to increase awareness and provide strategies . Trauma- Informed Endless Dreams

5 Project AWARE Purpose: To teach youth emotional literacy, problem solving, and social skills How: Eight-week Course Workshops and Individual Student Consultation Topics Include: Social Skill Development Empathy Problem Solving Skill Development Gang Prevention/Intervention Substance Abuse Information Trauma Informed Care Restorative Justice Decision Making Anger Management Positive/Healthy Relationships

6 Project AWARE in JCCS 2013 -14 Update and Review 13 JCCS sites
140 Unduplicated students served 2 Parent Workshops (north and south) JCCS administration, teachers, and students reported that Project AWARE made the following impact: Increased student attendance Increased student engagement Fewer violent conflicts Fewer suspensions Healthier school climate and culture Given these results, JCCS has requested additional support for the SY: 18 JCCS sites (currently at Umoja, Innovations, Sports Academy, Teen Options, South Bay Tech. and McPhatter Middle community schools) 200 Unduplicated students served

7 Special Education in JCCS
Students served Annually: Daily: 400 + Staffing: Special education teachers: 24 Coordinator: 1 Special Education Resource Teacher: 1 Speech Therapist: 1.5 Psychologists: 3 Additional Support Staff: Occupational Therapists Physical Therapists Sign Language Interpreters Other services as needed per individual education plan (IEP)

14 NITT-AWARE (‘Now Is The Time’ Project ‘Advancing Wellness and Resilience in Education’)
Trainings will be made possible to all JCCS staff in Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) YMHFA is available and offered to a student experiencing: mental health challenge mental health disorder, or mental health crisis First aid is given until appropriate help is received or until the crisis is resolved

15 Conclusion… The best teachers recognize two learning outcomes as essential for all of their students: Expanded capacity to think, learn and perform at high levels. Belief in oneself (self-worth, self-efficacy, confidence & hope). Goals that are interdependent and mutually reinforcing. Our goal is to strengthen student engagement and learning by joining with JCCS in the development, implementation and expansion of research-informed practices designed to ensure that our JCCS students are college, career, and citizenship ready.
