3 3 Introduction  Uganda’s ranking in the Global gender report has declined. Uganda is now 88 th out of 142 countries  This implies that gender equality is mainly rhetoric with limited actual interventions  Limited financial support for gender equality largely explains the reduced country performance

4 4 Resource mobilization strategy  The school must have this strategy.  The strategy should spell out targets for fund raising in a given time frame, probable sources of funds, mechanisms to be used to generate the funds and cost implications.  The strategy should also spell out roles and responsibilities of the various stakeholders championing the fund raising drive

5 5 Internal resource mobilization  Gender studies. research and services need resource enhancement  Internally the school can generate resources through effective use of its skilled human resource  The academic staff should be spearheading gender studies and research in the country. The consultancy fees earned could pay a commission to the school

6 6 Internal cont.  The academic staff should be collaborating with other universities for conducting gender research and studies  The school should also be using the students in this quest for resource mobilization. The research work for Post graduate students should be in demand driven thematic areas that could be paid for.

7 7 External resource mobilization  Sources of external funding for the school 1. The Development partners (UKAID, The Netherlands Embassy, SIDA, Irish Aid, UNWOMEN and the World Bank) 2. The Government ( Central and local levels) 3. The private sector (corporates) 4. Civil society organizations that commission gender research work

8 8 Tips for effective resource mobilization  Know the interests of your probable sources. For example many Development partners are currently interested in women’s empowerment. How is the school strategizing to tap into some of these funds?  Invest in applied research that facilitates policy making for the various stakeholders. For example illustrate to the private sector that gender considerations in production will increase levels of profits.

9 9 Tips cont.  Enhance visibility and relevance. Let the School for women and gender studies be the known stop centre for gender studies and research in Uganda and the sub-region. 1. Create alliances with the media 2. For relevancy ensure staff keep abreast with new developments. E.g oil and gas in Uganda, and globally –climatic change

10 10 Tips cont.  Create credibility and trust among various stakeholders, 1. The gender studies and research undertaken under the auspices of the school must of high quality. The published reports must be reference materials 2. The school graduates must be “real” and there should be no room for mediocers

11 11 Tips cont.  Get champions within probable funding institutions to be the allies to keep you posted about developments and changing interests.  Build partnerships with other credible universities with whom joint gender studies and research can be conducted. Current funding trends are targeting alliances as opposed to individual institutions.

12 12 Conclusion  Resource mobilizations is not easy but it is a trade that many institutions succeed in.  This entails good planning, strategizing and building of strong partnerships.  It also calls for exploitation of both internal and external sources of funding.  The School of gender and women studies can do it with commitment of all stakeholders.
