High School 101: ARHS Safety Plan The following slides will provide information regarding what to do during numerous safety situation while on campus at Ashley Ridge High School. Please be aware that different locations in the building often have slightly different safety procedures. Please learn what to do and where to go in the event of an emergency situation.

High School 101: ARHS Safety Plan The Evacuation Plan is utilized for all drills and events that require all persons to exit the school building. Fire Drills / Fire Evacuation o All evacuations, both drill or real, should be performed in a serious manner o Fire Drills are required at least once per month o Drills will occur unannounced throughout the school year Fire Escape Routes o Escape routes are posted in each classroom next to the doorway

High School 101: ARHS Safety Plan WHAT STUDENTS NEED TO DO… In the event of an evacuation emergency students should: o Evacuate the building using the escape route diagram o Meet his or her class once outside the building o Check in with his or her teacher or another staff member if separated form class or during lunch, etc. (This is critical for accountability for all students whereabouts in an actual emergency situation) o Wait for further direction from staff member Typically the fire alarm will sound to signal the need to evacuate the building

High School 101: ARHS Safety Plan WHAT TEACHERS NEED TO DO… Evacuation Accountability After evacuating the building each teacher should organize his or her class in the appropriate area and take role (teachers may want a sign or a landmark for students to find easily). o If all students are accounted for the teacher should hold up the green section of the emergency procedures quick flip book. o If any students are missing the teacher should hold up the red section of the emergency procedures quick flip book. Administrators will come around to each teacher to collect information (Please have names of missing students available for administration). Teachers: Please put a copy of the emergency procedures for your class in your sub plans when absent.

High School 101: ARHS Safety Plan Lockdown If an intruder enters the building and poses a threat to our students and/or staff the building will go into a lockdown mode. If there is a danger to students in the surrounding area of the school the building will go into lockdown mode. There will be a clear announcement over the intercom regarding the situation. For example an announcement will be made that an intruder has entered the building and for staff to go into lockdown mode. This will require all staff members to take charge of students and move them to a secure location, account for them and keep them safe until the threat has been eliminated.

High School 101: ARHS Safety Plan WHAT STUDENTS NEED TO DO… In the event of a lockdown emergency students should: o Follow all teacher directions o Quickly and quietly move to the wall labeled “Safe Wall” in the classroom o Report to the nearest classroom if in the hallway, restroom, nurse, etc. Teacher will secure the door, turn off lights and take role to account for all students o Wait for further direction from administrator, SRO or police officer. Typically an announcement will be made in the event of a lockdown.

High School 101: ARHS Safety Plan Tornado The Tornado Emergency Plan is utilized in the event that a tornado is in close proximity to the school. Movement Plan: Downstairs Teachers will: o Move students to the Hallway outside your room or area and occupy the wall nearest your classroom. Upstairs Teachers will: o Move your classes downstairs via the closest stairway and occupy the wall directly below your classroom. Do not use the elevator Café, Arts, PE, ROTC, etc. o See diagram on next slide Typically an announcement will be made in the event of a tornado.

High School 101: ARHS Safety Plan WHAT STUDENTS NEED TO DO… In the event of a tornado emergency students should: o Move quickly and orderly with their teacher to their designated hallway o FACE AWAY from windows and doors at the end of the Hallway. o ASSUME "CROUCH" POSITION on knees, head down, hands clasped on back of neck or head covered with book or jacket. o You may use a book or jacket to cover your head and shield your eyes.

High School 101: ARHS Safety Plan Earthquake The Earthquake Plan is utilized as an immediate action in the event of an earthquake. Earthquakes can occur suddenly without warning and call for quick response.

High School 101: ARHS Safety Plan WHAT STUDENTS NEED TO DO… In the event of a earthquake emergency students should: o Move quickly under a sturdy object such as a desk or computer table. o Attempt to take cover under the object during the quake. o ASSUME "CROUCH" POSITION on knees, head down, hands holding on to the desk or other object providing cover. o Teacher lead evacuation will typically follow any major earthquake situation.
