Sentence A sentence is a string of words that carry meaning. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Examples: A dog is chasing a cat. My father works at the hospital.

The following are not sentences: When I met her Probably, it. A group of fruits eat their grass through cane midnight. Doctor will together pain rub stomach.

Parts of Speech Is a traditional term to describe the different types of words that form a sentence. i.e. noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, interjection, determiner.

These parts of speech usually occupy certain places in a sentence. For example, the subject of a sentence is usually a noun or a noun phrase. However, sometimes it is not that easy as a class of word can function as another, e.g. gerunds are verbs that function as nouns.

Grammatical Function Santoso is a wonderful son. By function: Santoso subject is verb a wonderful son subject complement (it explains the subject)

By parts of speech (grammatical category): Santoso proper noun is verb (auxiliary verb) a determiner wonderful adjective son noun

If we know the parts of speech we can construct any sentence that is grammatically correct. Mary works at the factory. SVAdv My cousin lives next door. I went to Africa last year. The book that I read belongs to the library.

Basic Sentence Patterns There are 7 basic sentence patterns: SVHillary yawned SVOHillary opened the door SVCHillary is ready SVAHillary lives in London SVOOHillary gave me a pen SVOCHillary got a shoe wet SVOAHillary put the box on the table

Clause or Phrase? A clause has a verb in it, whereas a phrase doesn’t. Every week she goes shopping. She went to the city with her friends. The building at the corner of the street is our campus. The underlined are phrases.
