15. Hints for course selection
Choose classes that will challenge but not overwhelm you.
Choose classes based on your post secondary goals and interests- NOT which classes your friends are choosing.
Gains in G.P.A and class rank come from a combination of challenging courses AND good grades.
Talk to your teacher for advice!

16. AP and PAP Programs
GCISD is allowing open enrollment in PAP and AP programs, however it is always best to consider outside activities, previous academic record, and the time commitment required for advanced level courses when making your course selections.

17. Pre-AP/AP Classes
Pre-Advanced (PAP) courses are designed to prepare students for the entry into Advanced Placement (AP) courses and to meet the unique needs of qualified students. Basic content is the same as the regular course, but instruction allows for more in-depth and accelerated pacing. Preparation time (outside of school) is estimated to be 1- 1 ½ hours per class period.

Please review the many elective choices available in the POS book. A description of each course is available and can help you make choices about classes that will be of interest to you. The Program of Studies book is located on the GCISD website under the “parents and students” tab.

Please enter the English class that you wish to take next year. Four years of English are required for graduation.

Please enter the math class that you wish to take next year. Students are required to take four math courses consisting of:

Math Models will satisfy one of the 4 required math credits. Students must complete Math Models prior to Algebra II.

24. Courses & Alternates
Make sure to fill in enough courses to make a full 8 period schedule (A & B days)
You will be able to work on these requests at home until Feb 16th. At that time Skyward will close and you will not be able to make any changes in your requests.

25. Alternate Courses
You must enter a total of 5 credits of alternate courses into Skyward. (10 semesters)
The only classes you will have access to register for during arena scheduling are your requested courses and alternates. Choose wisely!

26. Schedule Change Policy
Students may not request changes outside of the change windows.
Examples of acceptable reasons for extenuating circumstances:
- Selected for a higher level activity such as band, choir, etc.
- Previously earned credit for course.
- Course needed for graduation.
- Desire to move to Pre-AP, AP.
Students enrolled in Pre-AP, AP, or GT courses will be granted a change into a regular class at the 6 week grading period pending space availability.
There will be no opportunities for elective changes outside of the June and August dates.

29. Athletics High School athletics are very competitive.
Students who are not currently playing a sport either in middle school or on a competitive team should contact the appropriate coach prior to registering for that sport. Contact information is on the “Athletics and Fine Arts Options” information sheet online on the Counselor’s website.

31. CREDITS
Credits are recorded on the transcript at the end of each semester.
Class rank is calculated in September, and June.
Classes are on a semester by semester basis. If a student fails a required course for the semester they must retake the semester of that course, or regain the credit by making 70 or higher on a credit by exam.
REMEMBER! 26 STATE credits are needed for graduation on the Recommended plan or above.

33. To be promoted:
Students need a total of 6 credits at the end of the freshman year. Basically , that means passing 6 classes first semester and 6 classes second semester. Remember that a student must be in attendance 90% of school days in order to earn credit. “Seat time” may be needed to regain credit lost for attendance.
