Arcimboldo spent the last 25 years of his life as an Austrian court painter, composing his portraits using different types of fruits, vegetables, different seasons and elements of the earth. A style that is featured in his work is ‘mannerism’ (spatial incongruity and excessive elongation of the human figure One form of this in Arcimboldo’s art work was the ability to have two pictures in one painting simply by turning it upside down.
