Layered Curriculum You Decide!

What we are studying for the remainder of the year! The Progressive Era Imperialism World War I The Roaring Twenties The Great Depression Rise of the Dictators World War II Cold War Post-War Boom in America Civil Rights 1960s & 1970s 1980s to 2015

What grade will you choose? What is layered curriculum? Layered curriculum divides work into three layers. Layered curriculum also gives students choice The three layers of assignments are: C-Layer, B-Layer, and A-Layer If you do not complete at least the C level requirements, you will receive an “I” for “Incomplete.” There is no below average in our class

C Level Activities C-Layer work is made up of basic knowledge and understanding. The student builds on his/her current layer of competency These activities typically ask students to collect factual information and reflect what ALL students MUST DO If students successfully complete the tasks required in the C Layer, they earn a C grade and can move onto the B-Layer.

B Layer Activities B-Layer work is “application or manipulation of the information learned in the C layer. Problem solving or other higher Layer thinking tasks are placed here.” To earn a “B” you must first complete all activities at the C Level and choose one of the B level activities You must use higher level thinking skills

A Layer Activities A-Layer work consists of assignments that require “critical thinking and analysis. This layer requires the highest and most complex thought.” Complete required C level Complete required B level Choose one A level activity Deep analysis Most require a writing component

Activities might include but are not limited to the following … Take notes daily Complete vocabulary activities Participate in whole class and small group activities and discussions Complete all daily reviews

Finished already?? If you complete all activities in the level you have contracted for and there is still time left, you will move on to the next level

How do I earn my grade? You will create the majority of your work on your own in class Teacher will monitor student progress and assist all students as needed Students must show his/her work to the teacher in order to move on You will only receive credit if the assignment is complete and accurate

Can I still Fail? Unfortunately, YES! Lastly, do not take this system lightly. It is still possible to fail the unit, although you have to work REALLY hard at it. If you come to class and participate, do your work and turn everything in, you will generally pass. If you chose to do the opposite … you will fail. Layered Curriculum is designed to reduce failure.

Typical Day in Class Complete daily review Whole class lecture or activity Individual work time

Your Grade Assessment (35%) Classwork/Homework (35%) Participation (10%) Projects (20%)

Practice Makes Perfect Just because it’s not right the first time doesn’t mean you can’t get it! Don’t worry… we’re all learning!
