MISSION To create a composition that represents a journey through space.
3
Warm up – Magic Finger Watch your teacher’s magic finger. As his/her finger moves follow the finger and change your voice. So if the finger moves up, your voice should go up in pitch. The finger may move up/down gradually or fast, draw dots. You need to watch carefully!
4
Warm up 2 – Space Beam Everyone should either have an instrument or create a sound using their voice or body percussion. The teacher or a pupil extends their arms in a V so an area of the class is covered by the beam. Those pupils should then play or make their sound. Change the beam so that all the pupils are playing, or just one or two.
5
Warm Up 3 – Space Switch Start by making a sound or movement. The class needs to watch. Then say SWITCH! The class need to copy the movement. The teacher will be doing a new sound or movement. Say SWITCH again and repeat the movement.
6
The Journey Your composition is going to be in Rondo Form. This is what it looks like. Introduction – Take Off Section A– Your spaceship flying Section B – Adventure 1 Repeat your section ASection C – Adventure 2 Repeat your section A
7
Space Theme LO: You are going to learn how to compose music that represents a space ship flying through space. You will learn to: Structure your repeated ideas (Ostinatos.) Find different sounds either on an instrument or use your voice or body Layer your sounds.
8
Space Ship Theme Your space ship is going on an adventure. LO: Compose a piece of music that represents your space ship flying through space. This is called the ritornello. What sounds can you think of? Experiment and find a sound to use, this could be your voice, body percussion, or whatever instruments you have available. Could you play the instruments in a different way?
9
Count 4 beats ta-ah-ah-ah ta-ah Ta Ta Ta-ah Ti-ti Ti-Ti Ta Ta Using Your Sounds Try playing or saying the following rhythms with your sounds. Which ones do you like? Can you come up with your own?
10
Structure Now either as a class or in your group. Use your rhythms to create a piece of music with a beginning, middle and end. You could: Layer your sounds Start off with one person and gradually introduce the others and have a cue for finishing Fade out at the end Change the dynamics
11
Completing Your Space Theme Your space theme is going to form the ritornello – this means return in Italian. Listen through to your space theme. Have you included: A beginning, middle and end Different space sounds Repeated rhythms or melodies (ostinatos.) What went well in your composition? Even better if?
12
Adventures LO: You are going to learn how to compose music that represents an adventure. (This is called programme music.) You will: Learn how to use your voice to create different effects. Learn how to use pitch and rhythm to represent objects going up or down. Learn how to use question and answer. Learn how to structure your ideas to have a beginning, middle and end.
13
Spaceship Adventures Your spaceship is going to have an adventure. These are going to form the episodes in your composition. What adventures might your spaceship have?
14
Conversation with Aliens Your spaceship has met some aliens and you are going to have a conversation with them. LO: To create a section representing a conversation with Aliens. 1)What questions would you like to ask an Alien? What do you think their answers would be? 2)What does an alien voice sound like? Try saying “Hello” or “How are you?” changing the pitch and speed of your voice. 3)Create some Alienish. Should they speak or try to speak English? Made up words? Beeps? Other sounds?
15
Conversation with Aliens 2 Now use your ideas to create your section. 1.In your groups, plan who is going to say what and how they are going to say it. 2.Could you have several people talking at once? 3.Make sure you have a beginning, middle or end.
16
Evaluating your Work Listen through to your section. Have you: 1)Included a beginning, middle and end. 2)Changed the pitch and sound of your voice. 3)Composed some sounds or made up some Alienish. What went well? Even better if?
17
Creating a Spaceship Battle Your spaceship has met another enemy spaceship and they start firing. LO: To create a section in your composition that represents a battle in space. Find an instrument or body percussion to create a firing sound. See if you can come up with a four beat rhythm to represent firing.
18
Creating a Spaceship Battle 2 Put the firing sounds together to form a composition. You could: Play the firing rhythms one after each other. Play the firing rhythms over the top of each other as they fire at each other. Decide on an ending, either flying off (get quieter) or an explosion to the enemy ship.
19
Listen through to your section. Have you: 1)Included a beginning, middle and end. 2)Four beat rhythms. 3)Use of call and response or layers. What went well? Even better if? Creating a Spaceship Battle 3
20
Landing on a Planet LO: Compose a soundscape to represent this new planet. What sounds are you going to hear? What do the birds sound like? What do the people sound like? What does the rain or wind sound like? What happens as you step out – crunching sounds?
21
Landing on a Planet 2 With your sounds create a structure for the soundscape. Which sounds are going to start? Which sounds need to go together? How are you going to end your composition?
22
Listen through to your section. Have you: 1)Included a beginning, middle and end. 2)Included lots of different sounds. 3)Layered your sounds to create a different atmosphere. What went well? Even better if? Landing on a Planet 2
23
Putting your composition together Now: Practise your composition like this: Space Theme Adventure 1 Space Theme (If you’ve only done one adventure finish here.) Adventure 2 Space Theme If you use all the sections, your composition is in Rondo Form and if you just do the first three your composition is in Ternary Form.
24
Rehearsing your Composition 2 You could add a countdown for an introduction. Play through your composition: Do you need to add any changes of dynamics? Do you need to rehearse moving from one section to another? Do you need to work on your timing? Is there anything that doesn’t work or needs changing? If you are happy then record your composition.
25
MISSION COMPLETE Well done Composers, you have completed your composition mission.
