Argument: Should schools ban chocolate milk?
Topic: Chocolate Milk Argument: Should schools ban chocolate milk? Side 1: Yes Side 2: No Flavored milk is not the nutritional equivalent of unflavored milk. It is significantly higher in calories, sugar, and sodium, and usually contains artificial colors and flavors. There are 11 grams (nearly three teaspoons) of added sugar in one cup of flavored milk. Is that a lot or a little? Well, according to the USDA, we are allowed a limited number of discretionary calories per day, and within those calories, the American Heart Association recommends that no more than half be used for added sugar. If we do the math, a girl aged 9-13 is limited to 16.5 grams of sugar per day. If she spends 11 grams on milk at lunch, she has 5.5 grams left. That isn't enough for one whole grain chocolate chip cookie (14 grams of sugar) or a bowl of sugared cereal. Chocolate Milk In Schools: Should It Be Banned? Posted: 04/20/2011 8:41 am EDT Updated: 06/20/2011 5:12 am EDT Coauthored by Kathryn Henderson, Ph.D., Director of School and Community Initiatives at the Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity at Yale University Chocolate milk is a natural choice when it comes to electrolytes, providing many of the same electrolytes that are added to commercial recovery drinks (calcium, potassium, sodium and magnesium) along with fluids to help you rehydrate. In fact, some research suggests milk may help you stay hydrated after exercise, more than some commercial sports drinks. Got Chocolate Milk. 1. U5-RW2: Close Reading & Proving Claims
Lesson Vocabulary Connection disagree valid logical reason research argument rebuttal claim refute In opposition to… opponent Today, we continue analyzing the debatable topic about “chocolate milk in schools”, and pay attention to the validity of the claims based on the evidence presented. We argue the relevance and logicalness of that evidence to prove the claim.

Model: It’s important that when debate, we support our position with relevant and logical research/evidence In order to prove our claim and convey this to the audience. Model… Active Work… Based on my research so far, the most relevant and logical evidence to support and prove my claim is… Some people may disagree about serving chocolate milk to kids in school, but I strongly believe that it is beneficial for them. For example, chocolate milk is a natural choice when it comes to electrolytes, providing many of the same electrolytes that are added to commercial recovery drinks (calcium, potassium, sodium and magnesium) along with fluids to help you rehydrate. In fact, some research suggests milk may help you stay hydrated after exercise, more than some commercial sports drinks. Based on the media clip analyzed during the DO NOW…cite another piece of research evidence that supports this claim… Think about what this evidence will do for the claim… Description Statistics/data Definition Anecdotal Problem/solution (cause/effect) Questions/answers

Quick Assessment#1 (DOK3)
Read the following excerpt from Frightful’s Mountain… She covered only ten miles before she turned back. She was hungry. She would find Mole. When she was over the pine woods where she had been held captive , she flew faster. Mole’s farm was ahead. Speeding swiftly, she overshot the farm. It had changed. The weedy fields where the game lived had been leveled and their black soil turned over in neat rows. The dense bushes along the fences, where many birds lived, had been clipped. She circled the culvert. It too, was changed. The bushes that covered its entrance were gone. The culvert was a round, bare hole. (Page 51) Which detail from the scene best supports the claim that Frightful should not be held in captivity? a. She was hungry. She would find Mole. b. When she was over the pine woods where she had been held captive, she flew faster. c. The dense bushes along the fences, where many birds lived, had been clipped. d. It had changed.
